suggestions for the export tool

Post by darrask »

a few suggestions for the export tool (Ctrl+Alt+S):

when launching the tool, the first exported image is being computed before the window appears, whether refreshing is set on automatic or not. It can be quite long, for jpeg2000 for example.
It would be nice to have the conversion after the export window appears, on will of the user, until then just using twice the original image side-by-side. If I use the export tool, it is exactly because I need different settings for every image, otherwise I would use the batch conversion, so preparing the exported image using previous export settings is a little annoying, because we have to wait until the image is computed, although we will change the settings anyway.

Just the same, when saving the image, it already has been computed for the side-by-side comparison, but saving it just relaunches the export process, and we have to wait until the end, although the image is probably somewhere in a buffer, and could simply be transferred to the desired location.

The blue progress bar is not really useful when exporting to jpeg2000, because we have to wait just as long a while as that what just has elapsed after the bar has filled up.

thank you.

Yes, a batch process in Export is really needed. Could the author please add this function in "batch convert"? Or how can i use script to batch convert color JPEG files to black-and-white TIFF?
Thanks a lot!

Well, batch is already implemented with the Ctrl+U shortcut. Simply select TIFF output format, go to transformations, choose CONVERT>convert to greyscale.

Until now the usability of the export tool with respect to my suggestions has not changed in the latest version.

So you would like that output was not computed if 'auto refresh' is not checked, right?

Hello Pierre,

Yes, if auto-refresh is not checked, it would be nive to have the window simply appear instantly on command.

For me it would be nice to have that even if auto-refresh is enabled, because it takes some time for Xnview to generate an image based on parameters which we do not even see, because the window hasn't appeared yet.
And usually, I do not use the last selected settings anyway, so computing the image automatically based on these last settings is not optimal.

And when we finally save the image using the last settings, it would be great to have Xnview just move the already computed image to the selected save folder, instead of recomputing it.

EDIT:
I want to add something:
I have the impression from the timing observed that when auto refresh is enabled and we press Ctrl+Alt+S to start the export dialog, the image is computed one time before the window dialog is displayed and once again once it is displayed. Computing it once would be enough.

You see it clearly with jpeg2000: press Ctrl+Alt+S takes 8 seconds (hourglass visible) before the window shows up, then he hourglass vanishes for a short interval and the window is there, and then the hourglass appears again, we wait 8 more seconds until the export dialog is ready to be operated. But computing takes 8 seconds when the export window is already open.
Imagine on slower computers and growing image sizes...
