REQ: Photo Quick Fix

Post by adhimass »

I hope the next version of XnView will introduce some quick fix buttons for common photo problems. I know most of the functions I listed here are already exist, but I hope they can be implemented as buttons in a (floating) toolbar, so we can access it faster.
  • * Fix red eye (ok, this has been implemented)
    * Focus enhancement / restoration
    * Noise reducer.
    * Add / reduce saturation, contrast, brightness, gamma, (in 5 steps increment)
    * Chromatic aberation / purple fringing reducer.
    * White balance fix (a dropper should be displayed for the user to pick a value that he/she think should be white in normal lighting)
    * Lens barrel correction (reduce fish eye effect)
    * Shadow area optimizer (make dark area in a backlit condition appear brighter. This is quite common in today compact cameras to enhance dynamic range.)

I agree, (by my own priority 1 to 5) :
  • * Fix red eye (ok, this has been implemented)
    * Focus enhancement / restoration (already implemented - a kind of)
    3* Noise reducer.(already implemented - a kind of, but may be improved)
    * Add / reduce saturation, contrast, brightness, gamma, (already implemented - a kind of)
    4* Chromatic aberation / purple fringing reducer.
    2* An automatic White balance fix (and as option, a dropper should be displayed for the user to pick a value that he/she think should be white in normal lighting)
    5* Lens barrel correction (reduce fish eye effect)
    1* Shadow area optimizer (make dark area in a backlit condition appear brighter. This is quite common in today compact cameras to enhance dynamic range.)

Another button to:
* Automatically fix scanned old photos. That is for photos with faded colors.

I'm not so much in favor of the "automatics" unless the parameters are user definable.

That said, I'd really appreciate

1. Color adjustments a la Lightroom:

Image

2. Highlight recovery a la Lightroom

3. Something like Lightroom's "Clarify" adjustment is very helpful. Clarify does some sort of "local" contrast adjustment that, in subtle applications, can really help dull photographs

If anyone knows of Photoshop plugins that perform these functions, please speak up!

I hope you're not suggesting xnview can or should become a full editor like LR, DxO, C1, etc?
There's a reason they're 100MB+ and 'NR' isn't some simple thing you can follow a textbook and implement. I don't think time should be wasted trying to replace PS.

Except for the CA/PF reducer and white balance, I think all the features (technologies) are already there (check Image/Adjust and Filter/Effects menu). They are just deep under the menu, should apply more than one adjustments, and we still have to adjust everything manually (some keyboard presses, some mouse clicks). Some presets should be nice for quick fixing most common problems. If you want finer adjustment, then just go through the menu.

For the CA/PF reducer, there is a nice free photoshop plug-ins available somewhere. It is not realy automatic though, but they have default values that can be used for quick fix.

One other thing, I think it will be nice if the photoshop plug-ins list implemented as an optional floating window instead of a dialog window. Better if it is transparent like floating windows in the Paint.Net.

PhotoFiltre (the same one who create PhotoMasque plugins) has some good quick fix buttons set on their toolbar which where some of the idea came from. They also have a realy nice plugins toolbar that is realy useful.
