RC4: Tip dialog at startup
In XnView 1.80, at startup a message box is displayed. This is annoying and limited. Instead, a tipp dialog should be displayed. This would allow for displaying various helpful information and people would not be so irritated.
Sure enough there should be a way (option) to reactivate the tip dialog once it has been deactivated.
Note:
I've marked this one as bug since I think that this is a must for XnView 1.80.

Currently i have this info dialog:Dreamer wrote:I agree.
I suggest to place some tips here...
"By default only the most common formats are available for loading/saving. If you want to have special formats, also, please visit the options, category ""General > Startup"""
I think this dialog or tips must be shown all the time, because it's an important information.
Pierre.
Pierre,
That dialog above should be the 1st tip...
I guess, Helmut wants something like this:

I guess, Helmut wants something like this:
Code: Select all
+---------------------------------+
1st tip: text......

+-----------+ +----------+
| | Prev. tip | | Next tip | |
+-----------+ +----------+

[x] Show tips at startup

+---------------------------------+
Exactly. This will look much more friendly and is much more flexible since it can show various tipps.Dreamer wrote:Pierre,

There's various possible tipps, already, e.g.:
1 - Special file formats.
2 - EXIF Auto rotation
3 - High quality thumbnails (instead of embedded thumbnails)
4 - Selection ratio allows for preparing photos
5 - Red eye correction (Zoom in, select one eye, then use correction)
6 - More tipps online in FAQ and pointer to this XnView forum
I'm sure once a tip dialog is available it will be filled easily. (@Pierre: Separate header file or plain text files, please).
Sure enough this tip dialog should only appear if the user starts XnView, not if you double-click on an image in MS Explorer to view it.

Could you help me to write this tips?helmut wrote: There's various possible tipps, already, e.g.:

Pierre.
I think so, with the help of some other people (English native speakers). Think we need a Wiki to work on the same texts, now. I'll ask Sören to set one up.xnview wrote:Could you help me to write this tips?helmut wrote: There's various possible tipps, already, e.g.:

Basically the same issues as for the translation of the on-screen texts and additionally: Finding out the right length, format, and texts will take a bit of fiddling around. So it would be good if the authors / translators could edit and then see what the result is. Also adding new texts will be much easier.xnview wrote:Why?helmut wrote: I'm sure once a tip dialog is available it will be filled easily. (@Pierre: Separate header file or plain text files, please).
But then you'll have many tips text files (1 for each language?)helmut wrote:Basically the same issues as for the translation of the on-screen texts and additionally: Finding out the right length, format, and texts will take a bit of fiddling around. Right, but does this really matter much? All files would reside in one directory and only the file with the current language would be read.xnview wrote:xnview wrote:But then you'll have many tips text files (1 for each language?)
If it's too much work to switch to text files, now, it might we can surely stick to the DLLs, now, and later move to text files (perhaps with all the on-screen texts).
I strongly recommend to keep one file per language, otherwise you will have to combine the languages from the translators manually or with some script. And version control will become difficult.xnview wrote:Or perhaps something lilke that:
