MP (Ubuntu): XnView doesn't respond to scaling

I run a 4k display which Ubuntu 16.04 handles well with the "Scale for menu and title bars" option under Ubuntu display settings.
Everything scales properly except a few apps don't respond at all, including XnviewMP.
No matter where I place the scaling XNviewMP remains the same. It is the menu and text elements that are too tiny, the thumbnails can be enlarged to an extent using the internal scaling.

Anyone found a workaround?

Please activate Large icons (Tools » Settings... » Interface » ToolBar).
You might also want to try a different theme (View » Theme).
