A fast and configureable EXIF viewer

Post by LittleOnestone_ »

Hallo!

Because this is my first post here I first want to thank you for this very good and impressiv program!!! Many Thanks:!:

The thing I need the most ist a fast and comfortable way to view the EXIF Information of pictures while browsing through a directory. I use this for comparing pictures and learn to find out which camera settings produce the best pictures to improve my photographic skills more and more. And of cause to learn to understand how the camera is working.

Using Edit/Properties (Alt + Enter) to see the camera settings (EXIF) is very uncomfortable, because same realy important informations are at the bottom of this window and I have to scroll very much around to find all Infos I want to see.
But the most unpleasing point is that I have to close and reopen and scroll for every new picture I open.

I think there is a better way to do this in XnView. For this I use the INFORMATION field in the VIEW mode. This way is very comfortable, because it can be showen/hidden easily pressing "i", it updates automatically while selecting a new picture and is freely configurable. This means you can freely select what to show and what not and freely reorder or group how you need it.
This realy is great and I think the best solution I ever saw in any program. Thanks for this great feature!!!

But however I'm still missing two features to make this working perfect:
First, there seams to be a length limit of the Information that I can write in the Information field (in the Options window) and/or a Maximum number of characters displayable in the View window. Is it possible to extent this feature in the way, that the Information field can at least hold double of characters??? This should not that complicate and would improve this function very much in the way to replace the EXIF Viewer.
Second: In the Insert list for the Information field (in the Options Window section View) it is not possible to select the additional informations that some camera manufacturers provide in the EXIF. (At least this is not working for my FUJIFILM FinePix S9500). Please provide this Information here, because it contains same very impotant Information about camera setting. This part is visible at the bottom of the EXIF View (Alt + Enter).

I would be very happy to see this two features in this great program.

Please tell us whether you will implement this feature!

Many thanks to you and all contributing people!!!

The current limit is not enough :-) Which info do you use?

Yes, currently i don't use MakerNote for this info, but i'll add it in a next version.

I use many infos (nearly all EXIF tags that give me any information). I use this function to replace the hole EXIF Info (like mentioned above) because I can group and sort all infos I want to see and how I want to see it. And I can switch it on an off easily! I don't want to miss the imediate refreshing info for every Image!!!
I would not need much more characters, but a little would be very helpfull and I could create my own fast and clearly laid out EXIF viewer!
Would it be a probleme with the limited lenth of a string variable or is it posible to provide us some more characters (perhaps via LongString or so)? This would be very nice!

If you want I could post an example of one of my INFO flields.

It's a pity that this MakerNotes are not available. Some very interesting informations are only there available. And to compare this MakerNotes for many pictures via the Alt + Enter way is quite hard.
I will anticipate your next Versions and thanks for all the work you will use in this feature.

I think this configureable EXIF Viewer is one of the strongest points in your program.

I never used that function before that thread...
...and wow! That thing rocks! :P

I use the following (International format):

Code: Select all

<Directory><Filename> (<Width>x<Height>x<Bpp>b:<Size KB>KB | <Modified Date [H:M:S d/m/Y]>)
<Model>
Date <Date Taken [H:M:S d/m/Y]>
<Focal Length>mm f/<F-Number> <Exposure Time>s <ISO Value>iso (<Flash> | <Metering Mode> | <Exposure Bias>)
...and I almost reached the limit! :(

Twice longer would be nice. Unlimited with horizontal scrolling as well would be perfect! :D

Olivier
PS: Thank you for this stuff, Pierre.

Did you change anything???

Post by LittleOnestone »

Hello Pierre!

Thanks for fixing this so fast and allready in RC1!

But what did you fix/change?
The only thing I can find is that there is a horizontal scrollbar now.
The field still holds a maximum of 495 Characters. (counted by hand - so that number could differ) But this is sure not more than in beta3! I can enter the same amount of Characters there!

Would id be possible to give as some more Characters in this inputfield???

Thanks

Oerhaps to make it clear a little bit more:

The Length of the Information Display itself that is overlayed to the display is not limited to this 495 Char. It can display more. But the input field in the VIEW Fullscreen section is limited :-(

I did not try the one for Slideshow...

Thanks

@Pierre
To help you with the bug-searching - the input field itself is not limited (you can write there many many characters by hand), but the insert function always limits the string when inserting new tags (and produces then garbage in the input field).

This is supposed to be fixed in XnView 1.82. As long as fixing is not verified and confirmed, it will remain in the "Bug reports".
