I recently reinstalled windows and installed XnViewMP again. I noticed immediately that the tree view is gone from the Favourites panel. Now its just clickable folders. I am not sure when this was changed or if it is a bug, but I very much liked there being trees in the favourites sidebar.

I uninstalled OneDrive and now it works perfectly. Thank you!
I never even had OneDrive running, I had it disabled, but simply uninstalling it from programs and features fixed my issues.

You seem to be right, I moved my images out of my users folder to another drive and xnviewmp can open them without freezing.

I set xnview as my default image viewer so I can double click files to open them.
I noticed if you open any file with spaces in its name, xnview will open with a blank white screen, but works for files with no spaces. I tested the following commands in the terminal to confirm this:
xnview /home ...
