Unless I'm missing something, I think you can already do this in xnview.
Select the images you want to compare. Press Shift-C. check "Use tabs".
**Double click one of the tab names**.
Then use left and right arrow keys to switch between images.

Compare more than 4 images, show diffs
I'd like the compare in tabs feature to allow comparison of more than 4 images.
I'd also like to have the ability to see the differences in any pair of images. This could be in the form of c*abs(image1-image2), where c is chosen to make the difference image more visible.

Can open ony one instance in Windows 8
I can open only one instance of xnview on my windows 8 laptop. Trying to launch a second instance takes me back to the one that's already running.
I've made sure that the "Only one Instance" setting is not checked.
I've tried versions 1.99.5, 1.99.6, 2.03 with identical behavior.
