Looks as if the issue is related to the access rights set on the /run/media folder which is assigned to the root account on Fedora by default.

Yes, I can access the local file system and I've checked the permissions of the mounted file systems but I cannot find an obvious reason to how the access rights differ between the local file system and the external ones.
