How to start XnviewMP on a new install?
New laptop and I want to use 1.87.
All the photos that I want to keep are on external drive and I don't want to have XV scan the laptop drive.

How do I re-read the xmp of an image already in xnviewmp?
The colour labelsand ratings were changed in ART. It's saved in the xmp. I checked the xmp file with vim.

* No, there is no /run/media (opensuse leap). Now it's /media/ (debian)
* I do access /media in browser but right click > show files in subfolders ==> nothing. No image, no thumbnails

I'm on debian 12. All my images are on a usb toaster hard drive.
I was on Opensuse leap 12.5. I upgraded to 15.6. The upgrade did not go well, their kernel (6.4) was causing me plenty of grief. I switched to Debian 12 Bookworm.

what do you use as settings?
Settings > View > auto zoom: last used & reset auto zoom : empty
I don't see any setting in the browser section of the settings:
With the browser: set to 100%

Select a set of pictures where one of them has the right xmp data . (perhaps easier if it's the first one selected)
Metadata>Edit Xmp
use < and > keys , then you can see the xmp description of the first picture, ( even if the very last option "do not load field values" is enabled )

I have a wide screen and use layout 7: left=directory tree; middle=small thumbnails; right=preview.
I have setup the viewer to keep the zoom setting with next/previous file.
How can I do the same in the browser?

Right-click a photo -> Open with -> Configure programs... Set as many raw editors as you wish. If I understand your needs correctly.
