It finally finished, yielding rating / counts as follows:

0 1072
1 2833
2 1017
3 4144
4 1885

Then I clicked away to another folder, and when I came back to this folder it had to start over again! e.g.

0 10388
etc.

Hi, I was going crazy because rated images would appear when I set the rating = 0 filter. Then I just discovered that if I filtered on rating = 0 and then checked it again, the count was always going down. And when I clicked any other rating e.g. filtered on rating = 3, the count was always going up ...
