I thought I was removing the hierarchy in the “file itself” via the method described initially. Is there any way to remove this hierarchy?
Thanks….gary

Re: Removing keyword hierarchy not sticking
Yes. The entire library was previously managed by Photo Supreme, which forces everything to be a subset of “categories”. (Europe, France, Paris). I have done a LOT of study and manipulation of this with other software to avoid the so-called “Lightroom” second set of xmp data to avoid how some other ...

Re: Removing keyword hierarchy not sticking
As a follow up to my own post, it turns out that even when I clean up all the hierarchy on one computer, it returns when I reopen xnViewMP. I did read somewhere on this forum that there needs to be some “export” setting to actually get the metadata written to the files. I can’t find that reference ...

Removing keyword hierarchy not sticking
I have removed keyword hierarchy via "merge" and "move" in entire list of keywords (categories) repeatedly and then "update files from catalog" of entire folders. My understanding is that this should remove the "parents" and leave a "flat" list of categories...which it DOES, but only on the computer ...

Re: Unable to Write IPTC in raw files
None of the files that I originally uploaded for testing had any metadata other that produced in camera OR written by xnv. I did not use other software to add any IPTC-XMP data. There seems to be general agreement that XNV IS writing data into the raw files' internal exif, but it is only visible in ...

Re: Unable to Write IPTC in raw files
If I understand you correctly, you have verified that the metadata is being written to the file, but only EXiftool can see it…none of the other panels. If so, that is exactly my experience, which I think makes the fields written to the files but invisible to all but Exit Tool then unsearchable. FWIW ...

Re: Unable to Write IPTC in raw files
Thanks for your involvement in this Pierre. It is helpful to know not to keep chasing a solution that isn’t currently available.

Unable Thumbnail rebuild
Since xnView seems to treat Fuji RAF files with difficulty, (see previous posts) this may be another "Fuji" issue, but the menu item: METADATA-ExifThumnail-Exif Thumbnail Rebuild is grayed out. ALL of the options in that menu are grayed out. Further testing reveals that this function is grayed out ...

Re: Unable to Write IPTC in raw files- more issues
I have been reading through this forum (a LOT) for similar discussions, but unfortunately, a lot of the posts reference settings from earlier versions of xnViewMP with completely different menus... (I am using ver 1.71 64 bit MacOSX)

Re: Unable to Write IPTC in raw files
Thanks again Pierre. I am able to see the "keywords" as you describe in the Exiftool section with the keywords labeled as "keywords" in the IPTC section and as "Subject" in the XMP section...so this is good. Reviewing the same files in other software reveals that the "keywords" are indeed visible as ...

Re: Unable to Write IPTC in raw files
Merci Pierre for your quick response. I have done experimentation on a different Mac (Intel) computer and find that I am able to edit ITPC on Nikon and Panasonic Lumix raw files that I was apparently unable on an Apple Silicon machine (although I will go back and investigate further...perhaps after ...

XvViewMP 1.71 64 bit (MacOSX) on Apple Silicon M1....
So the the Edit IPTC-IIM screen and associated templates work fine for Jpegs and certain raw formats that I have (Sony .arw / Canon .cr2 / and Oly .ORF but NOT Fuji .RAf / nor Panasonic Lumix .RW. This is after a LOT of experimentation.
