Suggestion 1. : Add the rating in the Edit IPTC/XMP Dialog.
Suggestion 2. : Make the Edit IPTC/XMP dialog accessible (ctrl I) from an image viewer mode tab. Not just from the browser tab.

You have settings for that
I am talking about the Edit dialog that is launched by Ctrl I shortcut.
I see IPTC tabs

OK, understood.
Rephrasing : "The rating is written both in the XnV db and in the file XMP:rating.
XNView does handle both correctly.
But if the XMP:rating is modified from inside an other software (Photoshop), then the image file is not coherent anymore with XNView db.

1. When setting a rating on a photo, the rating value (1, 2 ... 5) is written both in the file properties and in the XMP:rating field.
Why this redundant writing?
Photoshop CS4 (/File/File info) also manages photo ratings by writing/modifiying the XMP:rating field only.
