Windows 10 has three built-in ways to directly import (copy) photos from iPhone to Windows PC via USB cable:
1) New Metro-style Photos app
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 946a5ebc99
2) Classic “Import pictures and videos” wizard
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 1195d7b6c5
3) Simply copy files in Windows/File Explorer
https://cleanerone.trendmicro.com/blog/ ... dows-10-pc
--
Apple Support is very insistent on using Microsoft Photos app, not Windows Explorer, to copy pictures and videos to PC: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201302
One of the reasons is that during import Microsoft Photos app updates file creation date to match the EXIF date/time when the picture was taken.
Windows Explorer does not bother, file creation date would be the date the picture/video was copied to PC.
This is meaningful for iPhones, because files are named 1000-9999.HEIC, not as datetime on Androids.
--
The disadvantage of both Metro-style Photos app and classic “Import pictures and videos” wizard is that they both seem to proactively open, generate preview for each imported file.
Unlike XnView MP, for some reason both these Windows built-in applications cannot leverage thumbnail that iPhone had already generated & written into each HEIC photo.
This leads to excessive CPU usage during import (essentially, simple file copy operation), because EACH imported file has to be opened in full quality, then computationally intensive operation to generate preview takes place. When CPU does not have hardware support (ASIC) for HEIC, it leads to prolonged 100% CPU usage, heating, commensurate loudest fan noise that accompanies import operation, entirely unnecessary.
Microsoft may not necessarily help with this: given the inability of new Metro-style Photos app to even sort imported files into folders based on date that classic “Import pictures and videos” wizard could do a decade ago, it looks like Photos app is not really used even by its own product team (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Design_by_committee).
It would be so much easier for end-user if XnVIew MP “Import and sort” could import files directly from iPhone connected via USB cable and recognized in Windows Explorer, sort them into folders based on EXIF date.
--
This question was asked before regarding Mac: viewtopic.php?f=82&t=42217
The idea is that adding a feature to handle very regular import task would bring value, compared to clumsy and inefficient way Photos app does import, throwing all files into single directory by the thousands with no structure.
Thanks!

Viewing Android DCIM
When I get a lot of photos on my Android phone, I plug it into a usb cable to my computer and file-move them from my phone to my Windows computer.
However, I have to use Windows Explorer to do this, because XnViewMP won't view the contents of the Android file structure.
Neither can I drag-n-drop from XnViewMP onto Windows Explorer (or FreeCommander, my normal file-browser) to move photos into the phone's DCIM. The icon during drag-n-drop becomes a Ghostbusters NO symbol. And so I have to completely abandon XnView when it comes to any work with the Android DCIM folder that I access via Windows. I have to resort to Windows Explorer, instead, or use FreeCommander and enable thumbnail view.
XnView will let me view ONE photo at a time only.
Is there a setting or tweak that will let me use XnView to see the contents of that DCIM folder?

This is not difficult to do at all, as we have 2 alternative methods to force the Samsung Galaxy S2 to enter in USB mass storage mode after connecting to computer.
Method 1
1 -Enable usb debugging from Menu > Settings > Applications
2 -return to home screen
3 -plug usb cable in
4 -pull down status bar
5-press ‘ connect usb storage’ button
Method 2
Alternatively, without USB debugging enabled (USB debugging must be disabled):
Go to Settings > Wireless & Network > USB utilities and click the button > then (and ONLY then) plug in USB cable

Subject: 0.96: photos on connected smart phone (android) are not displayed
XnView: MP 0.96 64 bit
OS: Windows 10 Build 18362.720 64 BIT
Photos on a USB connected Android phone are not displayed when browsing through any of the available folders on the phone. It does no matter if its the internal storage or the sd card storage. I can browse through the folder structure just fine. But selecting a folder containing photos/images of any type (.png, .jpg, .gif, ...) does not update the preview pane. The preview pane is stuck to the last successfully displayed folder.
Effect:
What's the effect for the user?
Well, the user cannot use XnViewMP to browse the pictures directly on a smart phone. It looks like the user has to copy the photos first to the local drive - which cannot be real solution.
To reproduce:
The thumbnail/preview pane does not show the photos on a selected phone folder.
Expected behaviour:
Browsing the phone's folder structure should behave as you browse a folder on the Windows PC/Laptop. It should update the thumbnail pane and display the photos/images on a selected folder.

Re: How to define xnview as default program for scanner button
Cell phones can connect to PCs in different ways. It sounds to me, that you have chosen MTP mode, so it is telling Windows it is similar to a scanner (only 1 image at a time and no drive letter assigned). What you would like you cell phone is to appear as USB storage, so like a USB stick, hence getting a drive letter - then XnView shall be able to browse the pictures like on any other drive. You can change that setting somewhere in your cell phone configuration, the exact placing varies.XFi_fan wrote: Tue Aug 22, 2017 5:08 amBut I have many hundreds of pictures, and I want to be able to open that location on my cell phone, but XnView will only allow me to open pictures on my C: Drive. Re: xnviewMp does not copy........to a smartphone
some more details:
there is no difference if I copy to the SD-Card or to the Phone-Memory.
This happens in USB-Mode MSP or PPP. In developer-mode there is no error popping up but the copy doesn't work either.
If I copy with xnviewMp to an USB-HDD for example - it works fine.
If I copy with explorer or MyPhoneExplorer it works well to the phone.

xnviewMp does not copy........to a smartphone
Hello,
I'm trying to use this mighty XnViewMp as picture - manager on my PC and from PC to smartphone (Android)
I'm testing and working on several sites of the program and believe that xnview can do this job - but:
in the moment xnview does not write to the phone (via USB-connection). The explorer works well with the same connection and parameters.
xnview asks if to create a new directory - then : copying - and then: no permission to write.
where is it possible to handle this permission?
I started xnview "as Administrator" - no success.
anyone any idea please?

Re: How to define xnview as default program for scanner button
Whenever I check "add XnView as app to USB events" it is is forgotten instantly, even when started as administrator. I have 64 bit Windows 7. (Rebooting makes no difference.)
I have my cell phone connected to my laptop via a USB cable and I decided to use XnView because whenever I open my pictures via Windows Picture Viewer they are often upside down. Thankfully XnView has solved that problem.
But I have many hundreds of pictures, and I want to be able to open that location on my cell phone, but XnView will only allow me to open pictures on my C: Drive. It does "see" my cell phone, and it "sees" the different directories on my cell phone. But it will not open a directory of images on my cell. Why is that?
I can open the cell phone directories via Windows Explorer on my laptop, and when I right click on a .jpeg image it will open nicely in XnView. But clicking the "direction" arrows within XnView will not advance me through the images in that directory that have not already been opened manually via a "right click" followed by "Open".
In other words, I am really needing a way to "click" my way through the image directory, one image after another, within XnView. I am guessing that if the "add XnView as app to USB events" check box would "stick", my problem might be solved. But I do not know that.
FWIW, when I first connect my cell phone to my laptop via USB, one of the options that appears in the "AutoPlay" popup is "XnView, using XnVIew", but if I choose that I get this error message: "Cannot communicate with the scanner. Make sure the scanner is on..." I have no idea why it is talking about a scanner. But after I cancel out of the error XnView pops up and it lists my cell phone, and I can access any folder that contains just data, but I cannot access any folder that contains images.
Also, right clicking on my cell phone within Devices and Printers does not show any applications.
Suggestions?

Re: Moving through photos on an Android phone
Perhaps if I explain in detail the problem it might clarify things.
I plug the phone into a USB on my PC and go through the procedure on the phone for allowing transfer of photos by PTP.
I go into Windows Explorer and the folder on the phone containing my photos is accessible in Windows Explorer.
I click on any file in the above folder in Windows Explorer and it is displayed in XnView.
So far things are no different from when looking at other folders on on my PC or on my external HDs in Windows Explorer.
The problem starts when I attempt to scroll forward or backwards through the photos on the phone using either the left and right arrows in XnView or the left and right arrow keys on my keyboard. They will not scroll. To be precise, they may allow two or three changes of photo (seemingly randomly selected) but things then grind to a halt; no further scrolling is possible.
