Two items in 0.86 that bother me.
First, Unicode support. I paste in a letter with a diaeresis from KDE Character Select into a text file I'll use Exiftool (again, version 10.56 -- so much newer that the "embedded" one in your app it's almost laughable) to write into a JPEG file, and when I view that data --- let's say it's an IPTC ...

Can something be done about the "embedded" Exiftool version?
The current version of Exiftool in the Ubuntu/LinuxMint repos is 10.56. The version embedded (?!) in MP 0.86 is 9.45. The former comsistently gives an error about the encoding of Rating and/or Label when attempting to write other metadata to a file, while XnView MP itself sometimes fails to write ei...

Re: 0.85 x86: Reload doesn't reload Comment for view.
This same flaw persists in .86. "Open" pictures do not update with comments/new comments written from the command line, when "File>Reload is 'run,' but pictures left "closed" in the Browser (or the same picture/s as seen in the Browser) will update with the changed/new comments if i click "View>Rebu...

Re: Add Effects and plugins to XnView MP
I realise this thread will be a year old 17 days from this writing, but I'd like to chime in and request a few plugins. The effects I'd be looking for can be accessed in the Gthumb 3.4.3 effects by way of the Special Effects button on that panel. I've seen them nowhere else; not even the GIMP (2.8.3...

Take out "Supplemental Categories" for IPTC
IPTC-NAA deprecated them in 2005 and advises caution in using them. Another page I've read (couldn't find it on Google, sorry) says the "SupCats" tag has been merged with the "Keywords" tag and renamed "Subject" (like its XMP counterpart). Of course, I wouldn't expect it to be removed from both the...

0..8.6 Linux:Constantly having to reload in browser mode.
If I have XnView in Browser mode, and I am downloading picture files into a certain directory (which I have open in said mode), the new images do not appear automatically. They did for the first 2 weeks after I installed, but not when I reinstalled, and since then I have frequently ("Constantly" in ...

Re: 0.85 x86: Reload doesn't reload Comment for view.
you means the 'Info'? I can't reproduce, when reloading the image, info is updated It used to, and is Supposed To, reload it in viewer when I <File><Reload> the image. It doesn't do that. Why it would appear instantly in Browser mode is something I can't explain either. This still happens after I'v...

0.85 x86: Reload doesn't reload Comment for view.
I have {Comment} as the last tag visible in ordinary window mode and Full-screen. When I write a JPEG comment to a file fro the command line (usually Exiftool 10.10) with XnView running, then select "Reload" from the File menu, I don't see the new Comment. But I do in the Browser. Am I missing some ...

What happened to the Caption "window"?
I remember it being somewhat larger. Maybe I'm thinking of Classic. Anyway, if it isn't, it should be -- big enough to accommodate more than 255 characters without having to scroll (therein lies my annoyance). I'm kind of an oldschool annotator (for example, I still use single words, not phrases, fo...

Re: 0.83: XnView CONSISTENTLY adds a 0 Rating...
The 0 rating wasn't detected in xnview. It was found by exiftool. By the way, the few times I have added ratings via Exiftool to a picture, XnView MP consistently did not see them. Here is a situation where my XnView MP install and your master install detect different things in jpg files with regard...

Re: 0.82: Naming of Sidecar files
No chance of your bringing in exiv2 .exv files, is there? I have it on good authority from Phil Harvey that they're nothing but JPEGs without the header. Exiftool has had the writing and reading of these going back to 2014. The original spec (Andreas Huggel's) provided for the copying of IPTC and EX...

Re: File date not modified when changing exif date
I don't think that's what the OP means. I've noticed this also with version 0.83; the file modification times appear in mouse-overs as "Date Taken." This is incorrect. Come on, folks. Even IrfanView (of which I use the latest version in Wine) has an option to show the real Date Taken, when that info...

Re: Changed image resolution...
please tell me the command used with exiftool? What follows is for another file (with this one, X-MP saw the change right away). file0="gae77-7765-047-009.jpg" exiftool "$file0" -xresolution=108 -yresolution=108 -f -resolutionunit="inches" The script didn't have the - f -resolutionunit="inches" par...
