Summary of my proposal: there should be an option to select the profile to apply for images without embedded profile => sRGB / AdobeRGB / Other profile / Do nothing
Most compact digicams use sRGB, DSLRs tend to use AdobeRGB and ...

If I understand correctly, I think there is a workaround:
1. Batch process all your images with 'Resize' 320x240 and check 'Follow orientation'
2. Select landscape images (use sort by Properties) and rotate them (JPEG lossless rotation)
You should have all your images 320x240 maximized for portrait ...

I have set options/read|write/read/ camera RAW to high resolution and that didn't help. Go to Tools » Options... » General » Read/Write » Read » Camera RAW » Parameters and tick the checkbox for High Resolution .
