Does enybody know how to return to a no-fullscreen mode after entering a fullscreen mode in linux?

This is a known bug, it's not possible. Hitting Ctrl+Q works, but be prepared that it terminates the program completely. This bug was already reported.

One small addition: Exiting the full screen mode works if you opened an image via "File -> Open" by hitting the Esc key, but it doesn't work if you opened an image from within XnView's browser.

Another addition: No, it's even more different: They Esc key works regardless of how you opened an image, but only if no XnView browser window is running. So you can open XnView's browser, open an image, close the browser and then view the image in full screen mode and exit via Esc, but if you leave an XnView browser window open in the background, the Esc key won't work. It's a bug. Ctrl+Q will always work, but it terminates XnView completely.
