I note that full and half size renders take several seconds to show a new image.
Is there a way to:
(a) show the jpeg preview first, then render from RAW and overlay.
(b) speed up the RAW decode using a 2nd thread or Core. I notice that XNView only uses 25% of my Quadcore. Meaning it could go much faster if it was 2 threaded.

Re: Speeding up NEF raw preview?
I don't understand why XnView is unable to show the embedded JPG while rendering the HQ image in the background? Both EXIFTOOL and Preview Extractor http://drchung.new21.net/previewextractor/ can do this with ease. In addition Preview Extractor is multi-threaded!

I have my already set to show the embedded JPG ONLY, and it takes 2-3s
Chances are your setting is also set to show the embedded JPG already for raws.

in Xnview, you have 2 settings in option to set "Camera RAW" to "embedeed thumbnail":
browser/preview
view/misc.
Anyway, for RAW viewing, I prefer FastStone than Xnview, but Xnview stays my main picture viewer for everything else (mainly jpg)

Re: Speeding up NEF raw preview?
simply because fastone is (much more) faster to load the jpg embedeed in raw file than Xnview (Xnview needs about 1 sec), whereas Xnview seems to be faster to load full resolution jpg...

I find previews fine, as it loads in a separate thread.
Full view is very slow
