Feedback on XnView

Post by martinB »

I have been using XnView for quite some time now and I really like it. I have recently searched for an alternative and found none. XnView simply is the most effective image viewer I could find in terms of features, speed and ease of use!
Having said that, there are a few features that would make it even more useful for someone who is working a lot on Digital Content Creation (not so much on photography):
  • better support for floating-point High Dynamic Range (HDR) images (OpenEXR, *.HDR, floating point TIFF): some simple exposure adjustment, correct pixel value in color picker
  • a better color picker that not only reports RGB, but also HSV, Lab etc.
  • a histogram, for each color channel as well as for luminance
  • display of individual color channels, including alpha
  • An option to remember the zoom settings - right now, I zoom into an image, hit PgDn for the next, then PgUp again and my zoom is lost
  • better caching of 'neighboring' images - right now, only the 'previous' image loads fast, not the 'next' (even if that was open before the 'previous'). If this were faster, it would be easier to compare two images
  • an "image compare mode" would be great - it loads two images and then the user can slide a split screen between the two (see Adobe Lightroom for an example)
Not sure this kind of list is the most effective way of posting these suggestions, please let me know if you need them in a different place/format. I'd be happy to contribute towards improving XnView, just let me know how.

OK, I will then use this to talk about zooming, and repost the others later.

LockZoomFlag=Flag
Not sure I got this working correctly.
First of all, I have an entry called 'LockZoom=0' in my .ini - not sure what this does? I tried changing that to '1' and this kept the zoom constant across multiple images but only up to the point where I pressed '/' for the first time. After that, it always resized the images to fit into the window.

Then I added 'LockZoomFlag=1', which caused the zoom lock to stop working completely and 'LockZoom' to always bet set to '0' when XnView was closed.

Ideally, we had either a hotkey to toggle between zoom lock and autozoom, or, even better, XnView would remember for the session which image was manually set to which zoom level and which was autozoom. For Quick-Show, I would like to see an option not to do autozoom, too.

Thanks again
Martin

Could you add a feature where the start and end times can be entered for date captured and the program fills in the times in between

thanks

P.S. the screen message that says write to all files, should say Write to all files OR selected files
