Ah... that wizard wand is a good metaphor, also!

I remember a set of folder icons:
  • Old = grayscale & cobweb-covered

They look good to me! Simple and direct, but with differing visual impact, making them easy to distinguish from other icons.

Doesn't the use of letters defy the whole concept of iconography?
Besides the wizard wand, a lightning bolt seems to be another common symbol for “Automatic”.

The color map plus color wheel of #4 and #5 would be great for a “Convert to...” drop-down toolbar button.
The palette, gray-scale, and color ramp icons in the first three proposals could be used for the individual “Convert to <color depth>” commands.

Existing drop-down toolbar buttons in XnView:
  • cmd_Balance
  • cmd_Browse
  • cmd_FileOperation
  • cmd_JPEGLossless
  • cmd_Open
  • cmd_QuickSlideShow
  • cmd_Zoom100

Wizard wand and lightning bolt are compex and too common.
"A" - simple, small and looks like attribute for me.

#1, 2, 3 - PaletteChoose.
#4, 5 - Convert from/to full/fixed colors (color depth)

From my perspective, #4 and #5 are just a "muddle"... too many colors and shapes to communicate effectively. :?

PS. Aren't color depth and palette really the same thing?
