Load/Save slideshow list to a text file?
A familiar feature of IrfanView that I think deserves inclusion in XnView, not least because XnView handles more EXIF and IPTC fields and these can be added to the slideshow display options in full-screen.
Okay, so why not just go the usual route and add a folder to the temp filelist? I happen to do a lot with an application that can create filelists of jpegs etc., in more than one directory at a time. Importing the same pictures as on the list by the method currently supported in XnView would be time consuming and, imo, monotonous.
Hope to see it in a future version very soon.

You would like to add a folder in the filelist?

Re: Load/Save slideshow list to a text file?
No. Adding a folder in the filelist, as I described it, is the current method for setting up a slideshow. What I would like to see added as an option is importing a plain text file (ASCII, UTF-8, doesn't much matter what encoding) and having XnView use that. The lines in the text file would have to include, and indicate no more than, the full path to the file, for example C:\Pictures\XnView\Logo.jpg. If any of the lines in the text file did not give a full path to the image, XnView would skip that line and move on to the next one. If none of them gave the full path, XnView should, reasonably, terminate the slideshow.xnview wrote:You would like to add a folder in the filelist?
The advantage to this is, one can pick and choose between folders on a disk which pictures to include in the slideshow. I know that's possible now, but I hold it takes some extra effort. Image-management and -cataloging programs such as Microsoft Expression Media for Windows & Mac, and digiKam (versions after 0.9) in Linux are capable of generating the right kind of list in text format, and these can be of picture files all in one folder, or located in several folders on the same or different mounted disks. Incidentally, MS Expression Media saves its text lists in Unicode.
My other motivation for suggesting this feature be added to XnView was, as I mentioned in the original post to this thread, that XnView reads and writes more IPTC than does IrfanView. I've suggested that IrfanView's creators add a few fields, but this has met with some resistance and I don't think it's likely to happen in the near future. Therefore, I'm approaching this from another angle: XnView reads the IPTC tags I often use and would like to see displayed alongside more mundane details as file name, image size, file-length, and such in a slideshow. But what it lacks is IrfanView's ability to import a file list like the ones generated by the kind of applications I mentioned above.
I hope this clarifies a few things that I may have left unclear in my original post to this thread.

You can do that, .sld is a text file with options + fielist...Silversleeves wrote: No. Adding a folder in the filelist, as I described it, is the current method for setting up a slideshow. Re: Load/Save slideshow list to a text file?
im looking for such a feature in xnview too.
it is (not only) for slideshows. it is for saving and reloading searchresults, maybe generated by other programs eg specialised searchengines.
in xnview i found "create - file listing" and with checked filenames/fullpath (only) such a list could be generated.
but how to load the pictures from such a filelist in xnview ?
in irfanview there is an option 'load from filelist'. i didn't find such an option in xnview - is there a way to do this ?
thank you

Re: Load/Save slideshow list to a text file?
not the list, the pictures which are referenced in the list.
the list contains full pathes to pictures. its like a search result or the filelist created with xnview "create -file listing' (with pathes and filenames only).
just load this pictures in the browser - for further work.

Re: Load/Save slideshow list to a text file?
This is similar to what I want...
Keyboard shortcuts in slideshow
"Enter - to show the current image in the browser, in its original location."
So another option could be added for this shortcut:
( ) open current image in its original location *
(o) open all images from slide show in browser (and select the current image)
Perhaps also the shortcut might be customizable, I suggest Enter and middle mouse button by default, double click to toggle fullscreen, Escape to exit slide show.
* edit - this option is not needed at all, since we could switch view to viewer and back to browser and the file will be opened in its original location, the same as the search results now.

Re: Load/Save slideshow list to a text file?
yes, it is similar structered. that is why i asked in a thread "slideshow" for this.
the slideshowfile contains a list of files and (!) the parameters/settings for the show.
my interest here is the (load from) filelist only. the background for this is the cooperation of xnview with other programs, especially totalcommander.
it is the same reason as in the thread "calling external programs from xnview" where i asked the author of xnview for support ( http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=15465 ).
here i am interested in the other direction "calling xnview from other programs", especially from total commander.
i mostly worked with irfanview (and old thumbsplus). but now i found the metadata-support in xnview and i jumped to heaven especially because of the support for descript.ion in xnview. i am an heavy user of comments in descript.ion not only for pictures - because all storable objects in all filesystems could be described. but there is no support for it in irfanview (and not in old thumbsplus).
this metadata-support is one reason why i added xniew in total commander as described in xnview manual. and now i am looking for a solution in xnview to "load pictures from a filelist" which is a feature of irfanview.
this feature is very usefull to view and explore search results from total commander "as a whole" and to do further picturework on it with the preferred picturetool:
i generated a filelist in totalcommander with pathes/filenames and loaded it in irfanview ("load from filelist") and there was all together for further picturework - but as written: no support for descript.ion in irfanview.
maybe there is way to do something similar in xnview too ?
i am newbie in xnview and just exploring the possibilties of it. maybe there is a solution "deep inside" which i don't know yet.
but maybe not because Dreamer (with 4354 posts) wrote this as similar structered whish for slideshows (open all images from slide show in browser (and select the current image)) ...
thank you

Re: Load/Save slideshow list to a text file?
great - thank you very much !
and you will keep the suport for descript.ion in further versions ? in your multiplattform-project (MP) too ?
is this support of descript.ion already in your MP-beta implemented ?
thanks once more

What about this...xnview wrote:Ok, i'll add a 'load filelist' in browser in a future version...
Start slide show (.sld) in the main xnview program - start quick slide show immediately with the first picture. This way all xnview features (and shortcuts) would be available, e.g. Enter to view the files in browser, F11 to toggle fullscreen, zoom, copy...
When 'playing' a slide show, there's no way to do anything with the picture, e.g. copy, move, zoom, edit, crop...

Re: Load/Save slideshow list to a text file?
Slideshow lists are in, good.
I'm a little annoyed that, if you <Esc> from a running slideshow, then <Esc> again, then go back to Tools>Slideshow, you notice that XnView has unloaded your list from memory.
IrfanView remembers lists. Where IrfanView falls down, for me, is that it will not read in the IPTC Core "Fixture Identifier" tag, called "Event" in MS Expression Media 2, "Job Identifier" in XnView and Photoshop, and by its original name in Apple Aperture and ACDSee Pro 2 and 3.
So, not being a coder by any stretch of the imagination, I'm inclined to think it would be the work of a few moments for Pierre to patch the current or next beta version of XnView Windows to "remember" the last set of files viewed in slideshow. Maybe a routine to write a compressed and read-only SLD file into C:\TEMP or something would aid in jogging Xnview's memory on this score?
Or maybe my install is just bollixed and this isn't a flaw but a feature?
