A really unfortunate key assign change in 1.8x

Post by Zomo » Thu Jul 21, 2005 12:42 pm

To handle viewing a series of images, every image viewer I've ever used--up to and including XnView 1.74--uses the Space Bar to move forward (next image), BACKSPACE to move backwards (previous image).

For XnView 1.80.1, this has unfortunately changed for some reason. BACKSPACE still moves backwards (as does PAGE UP), but Space Bar no longer moves forward. Instead Space Bar is used to start a slide show (?!). The new key assignment (and only key I can find) to move forward through a series of images is the far more inconvenient PAGE DOWN key. :(

Yes, there is an option for the mouse wheel to move backward and forward through an image series, but I use that for zooming. It is no replacement, especially since I've been using the keyboard for many years to handle image series progression. This change is so inconvenient here that I'm very likely ditching XnView and going back to ACDSee. Please (please, please) put the Space Bar back to "next image". All other image programs I've used and like do it this way (ACDSee, Irfanview, SlowView, etc.). If the dev doesn't want to do this, then how about giving us an option (far more complex to code) to reassign keys?

XnView became my favorite image viewer a while back and I used to recommend it to all my friends & associates. This change has stopped me from doing so. Hopefully it can be reconsidered.

Solution #1 - support this request - Use Space key to... "6 in 1" option.

Solution #2 - use mouse wheel to switch images and new feature to zoom - RMB+wheel or LMB+wheel.

There are also other new useful features...

- RMB+LMB / LMB+RMB - reset zoom
- RMB+MMB / LMB+MMB - lock zoom

LMB - left mouse button
MMB - middle mouse button
RMB - right mouse button

Sorry, I wasn't clear on when Space Bar for image series progression is used in nearly all other image viewers & earlier versions of XnView.

It is used either in full screen view or in maximized single image view in the XnView browser.

Was actually looking forward to supporting the author's work by buying the Deluxe version when it comes out in 1.80 version, but I'm not going to unless this is changed, unfortunately.

To Dreamer: as mentioned in my original post, using mouse wheel to switch images is already an option in the current XnView and it is no substitute to the old Space Bar method used by everything else.

Heck, XnView now uses Page Down now to progress through an image series as an "option"--its the reason I posted on this forum with this request/complaint in the first place!

"6-in-1 option for Space Bar"? OK, but like my request for reassignable keys, its going to be complex for the author to implement. I'd be happy if he just put Space Bar back the way it was used before (and again, how the majority of other image viewers use it).

Also, keyboard zooming still works with numpad "+" & "-" as it did before, so nothing needs to be changed there. RMB+wheel (or LMB+wheel)? I take it you don't realize how awkward that is, especially for someone with arthritis (for instance)....

:) Hello !
…Guess I should register so I can edit my posts.
- It's a good idea, I thought to recommend this to you just a moment ago ;) I appreciated your messages here.

- Like I said before, I'm in favour of the former using for the <Space-bar>.
- The Dreamer's idea is not bad, but a bit complicated, IMHO…
- Besides, i.e. I've a Logitech™ mouse, for which the "MMB" - pressing the wheel - is configured for "gestures", and I don't wish to change that. This prevents to use it easily…
…RMB+wheel (or LMB+wheel)? I take it you don't realize how awkward that is, especially for someone with arthritis (for instance)…
• … or / and some handicap on one hand, and some rheumatisms on the other, like I've when the weather is changing … Image
• A full key-remapping feature isn't so complicated, we have it in Total Commander , this is only (about the GDI) a small section of an Option-page…

It's not so complicated, this is a part of my 2nd post there (I'll split this post to another topic):
If it's too complicated, what about this?

Just two options for Space key:

(o) Start/Stop Quick Slide Show
( ) Switch to the Next file
Edit: You can find this suggestion (above) here - Space key / Switching / 2+2 options (and you could support at least first part).

I absolutly agree with Zomo: I'm so extremly used to use the space key for moving forward by every other picture viewer, that I'm now thinking about changing back to Irfan View or ACDSee - even if XnView is now (all in all) the best Viewer on market.

I really hope the next versions of XnView will assign space key to moving forward (what is quite logical - using the biggest key on keyboard for the mostly used fuction) OR allow free key assignment!

Anyway: great program!

I'll add an option
