Rating Images in Viewer Mode

Post by euquant »

I'm a big fan of XNView and it comes closest so far to the best solution for my image viewing needs.

I particularly like the possiblility of displaying multiple windowed images at the same time for side by side examination / comparison. As far as I can tell, this is a feature that I haven't been able to find among the immediate competition.

However I'm getting interested in using the metadata more, but getting at it just takes too many steps to comfortably and efficiently process a great number of images. Perhaps I just need to adjust my workflow...

For now I would like to focus on one question:

Is it possible to rate an image while fully viewing it in Image View Mode? Is it necessary to switch back to the browser to do this?

I was making the mistake of using the Browser hotkeys
Tag/untag - Ctrl+T, Insert, Space
Rating - Ctrl+Numpad 1/2/3/4/5
Remove Rating - Ctrl+Numpad 0
Colour label - Ctrl+Alt+Numpad 1/2/3/4/5
Remove Colour label - Ctrl+Alt+Numpad 0
and all I did was ruin a bunch of pictures because I accidentally adjusted brightness and contrast.

Even if there were an icon on the toolbar if it is impossible to implement a keyboard shortcut?

According to this ancient post, http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=11075, it is possible.

What am I missing?

Thanks for the great program. I really have enjoyed using it. But I haven't been able to find a perfect solution to what I want at any cost. Maybe I just need to learn programming and build my own or learn enough to help you nice folks out... Now where would I start with that? I think a full degree programme in computer science and informatics is overkill, but I'd welcome your tips to explore in the right direction with a nice gentle on ramp leading to something real useful.

10 years gone by and wow, I stumbled upon this post since I have the same problem in 2023.

Why am I not able to rate images in viewer mode?
I need the option to 'rate & go to next image' in viewer mode.

PS:
best would be the option to have a command that rates an image and moves it to a certain folder. In other words I like to press X in catalog or viewer mode and this moves then the file to a certain folder and rates it in a certain way. E.g., folder disapproved and rating 1 for bad.
The reason is at the moment if I disapprove an image in cat mode and move to the next image and to the next and go back in reverse order to check some earlier images those I disapproved are still there. Logical, since they are in the folder. That would be ok for images I tag as 2 or 3, but not for those I am for 100% going to delete. Those I rate 1. These should then be out of the way in the named folder so I can double check.
