1.94.2 : PNG pics showing black screen in full screen mode

Post by S.H.Bouwhuis » Thu Aug 21, 2008 4:56 pm

When in full screen mode some of my pictures only show a black screen. So far I have only seen this with PNG pictures.

Pierre, where can I send/email/... you example pictures?

If pictures aren't private: http://imageshack.us/ (see topic Using ImageShack to upload sample images)
There is indeed no WinZIP under my rock.

Hello,
I have just tried your two png samples on my system with v1.94.2 and I have not your black screen in the full screen mode for these 2 images.
So here, I can not confirm this bug.

Do you use a gamma correction (options\view\use gamma correction) ?
Witch XnView version and OS ?

Ok, here is my XnView.ini file.

Please note: I renamed XnView.ini to XnView.jpg because the file host doesn't support uploading ini files.

Ok, I think to found your bug, but I don't have a clue, what the reason is for.
A comparing of the ini could find the differences, because my settings doesn't bring it up.
Here is my ini: http://www.savefile.com/files/1747759

Lets bring the bug on stage:
(It just happen with your ini.)

full screen mode was right,
but there is an important info which was missing:

Code: Select all

Zoom value below or equal 95 percent: picture is shown
Zoom value over 105 percent: black screen
tested on Win XP SP3, XnView 1.94.2

P.S.: I guess oops66 had maybe 100% Zoom and this not affected, too.

Ok, I compared all the differences, and I reduced it to a single line.

It can be fixed by changing the following line:

*** FAILS ***
[View]
Fit=2

*** WORKS ***
[View]
Fit=3

Pierre, could you please fix this bug?

@ oops66 and RGBA
Many thanks for the help guys, hopefully Pierre will fix this for the next release.

Further testing revealed the following for the [View] Fit value:

*** WORKS ***
Fit=0,1,3,5,6,7,9

*** FAILS ***
Fit=2,4,8

As long as its only a wrong or not fitting setting in the ini
and no real bug in the app, you can adjust it to your favour
there are maybe a few customizings, which could confuse you
(other toolbar and language), sorry for that. :|

@RGBA
Maybe I don't understand what you mean, but I really want it to be fixed!

I always use 'Fit=2', which stands for, "Fit image to window, all". I would really hate it if I can't use v1.94.2 (and up) because of this! Sure, I could from now on use an old version only, but I'd much rather use the latest version.

I wanted to say, that it might be easier to replace the working ini with yours
and set all your configs (cache, view..) once again compared to a long way
tracing the bug. :)

Because I don't believe in this case (non offensive) on a real bug (related to dll, exe..) in XnView.

:? This is clearly a bug:

1.
It only happens with XnView (other picture viewers show the picture correctly).

2.
It only happens with certain settings for stretching pictures.

It is clear that something goes wrong with the calculations for the size of the pictures. I'm a software developer myself, and have projects where I show stretched/fitted pictures. None of my projects has problems with the calculations of the size of the pictures.

I can't reproduce it even with your .ini
You use fullscreen from edit mode?

Well, surely Pierre can look at this, but don't be surprised,
if its comes back with NEF (no error found) or stays unchanged.
Btw. I'm working for a tech support and have seen enough things
to classify a bug compared to just a setting.

- It has shown, this is only with your posted settings.
(I hope some would post more comments to this and will check it, too.)

Did you tested it with a clean (out of the box) xnview version already?
- You can try this easy with a portable one (no installation),
so your other one will stay untouched.

I made already a double check on my system (the same) and this "zoom-bug"
doesn't happen anyway with a fresh XnView v1.94.2 Minimal version (Zip file).

I'm really not angry about you personally, just a bit worry, that the priority
of real important things will once again taking more time, if this exposes as a simple (user) mistake.

1. Go to Browser mode.
2. The thumbnails are generated correctly.
3. Double click the picture.

OR

1. Double click the picture in Windows Explorer.

It's odd that RGBA en me can reproduce the bug while you cannot.
If you want I can test it against older versions to see when the behaviour occurred. (where can I find old XnView versions?)
