Zoner PhotoStudio Home free today (2/9)

Post by JohnFredC »

Go here for a free version of Zoner PhotoStudio 12 (only available on 2/9/2010).

Zoner is not a competitor for XnView (not an image viewer per se), but instead is more of a Photoshop/Paintshop Pro style of photo editor. Some previous versions of Zoner were not "up to snuff" in my opinion, but this version is really excellent in design, execution, and functionality. Here I primarily address the Zoner browser functionality.

This is the only photo manager/editor I know of that supports two (2!) side-by-side browsers. Drag and drop between the two thumb panels is supported.

Zoner has a tabbed interface and offers strong customization of things like labels, text overlays, etc. Also, each thumbpanel (in the browser tab) can show both thumbs AND column headers (a la TC) so that sorting thumbs by various metadata fields becomes very straightforward (just click on the column header, even if thumbs are showing). Excellent.

It's as if the Zoner guys looked at the XnView Layout 7 browser and threw a million programmers at it, addressing many of the requests which have been posted in this forum.

The editor functionality is also strong. Open an image in an editor tab and check out the "Advanced Resize" dialog, for instance.

Complaints:
  • As in the past, the Zoner browser supports dual thumb panels, but not dual trees or previews.

The various skins (actually, just color schemas) apparently cannot be modified. IMO the dark schemas are too dark and the lights, too light.

No "exclude" folder list... indeed, little control over the thumbs cache except location.

    No thumbnail size slider.

    Thumb labels are centered only.

No versioning either, so you Lightroom fans should probably give Zoner a pass.
And others, of course. Nevertheless... it's free, if you act fast!

Hey John--

Thanks for the link. I squeaked in under the deadline and got a copy. Don't know if I'll like/use the program, but appreciate the link.

The only problem is that when I reinstall Windows I won't be able to install the program again, so it's like a demo, or trial version. :|

So I did some digging.

I couldn't find a comparison between the two anywhere, (altho there is a comparison between home and professional available on their website) so ended up throwing caution out the window and downloading the GAOTD version.

It installed and updated cleanly over the express version. The only difference was that I had to do a computer restart after installing the home version.

When I opened the program, the first thing I checked on was panorama, because that isn't available in the express version. It's there now, in the home version. A quick look at the rest of the options show more are available now throughout.

My big reason for liking the way Jeanjean originally posted was that I'd have the code key, so I could reinstall it after an OS reinstall (which I seem to end up doing once or twice a year, because I do something wrong and mess it up.). I figure I'll stick with the home version now, and if I later have to reinstall the OS, I'll at least be able to use the express version after that.

BTW I donot think there is a truly portable version, same as XnView.
