This is a feature that used to be quite standard in ACDSee and other old image viewers.
Simply: in the Viewer mode, there should be another zoom mode that automatically adjusts the size of the window to fit the image size, so that there is never any wasted screen space. For images larger than the screen, the window will resize to cover the whole screen, and the image will either remains zoomed to 100% or it will be zoomed out to fit in the window. I prefer the latter, but there should be an option to choose the default behaviour.
cheers!

Re: Request: resize window to fit image
I second this option, I need images opening by default with the window sized by the size of the image to so that a boarder does not appear around the image to conserve screen space.
BTW xnview is the best image viewer I have ever seen, than you for developing it.
