Request: Remove "Copy pathname" and replace it with...
Hi,
Right, I just don't feel satisfied with only this "Copy pathname" that is currently in these MP beta's. It's juts my opinion. Also the "Copy pathname" only copies the folder path and not the full path including filename. Ok, see bwlo for my list of suggestions.
1. I think "Copy pathname" should be removed and replaced with TWO new menu items:
'Clipboard: copy path(s)'
and second
'Clipboard: copy more'
.. I made this mock-up to show how it would look like :
- So the 'Clipboard: copy path(s)' would copy the full path to a file (e.g. C:\Users\Desktop\3-CARS.png)
- and the 'Clipboard: copy more' would give a sub-menu to users for more clipboard copying operations just like the XYplorer example.
sub-menu in XYplorer of what the 'Clipboard: copy more' would do
So in Xnview MP the 'Clipboard: copy more' would sub-menu to;
Folder path(s)
Filename(s) only
UNC
Plus more could be added later.
2. The 'Clipboard: copy path(s)' would of course support copying paths to selected multiple files in the Browser (e.g. mouse-select 2,3,5 files and copy their path's to a downward list like a file-manager can)
3. Both these menu's need to be accessible in the Viewer mode too and not just the Browser mode. It's just that in Viewer the brackets of '(s)' in 'Clipboard: copy path(s)' would not be needed.
4. Both these new menu items should have an icon (16x6 for menu and 24x24 for toolbar), yes this would require help from mezich in this topic about icons for these, that is if these proposals in this topic are first approved.
I hope everyone agrees with this request.

Yep. Very good suggestions.
I think "Copy special..." is the standard nomenclature for this sort of thing, though.
Perhaps an INI setting to determine the default behavior (instead of navigating that big menu every time) would be good.

OK,JohnFredC wrote: I think "Copy special..." is the standard nomenclature for this sort of thing, though.
.. So get rid of the 'Clipboard:' prefixes and just leave them as:
'Copy path(s)'
and
'Copy special' >
These are simpler, more concise and would translate to other languages more better don't you agree?

Re: Request: Remove "Copy pathname" and replace it with...
"Copy Path" icon created; http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.p ... 150#p90804
So just awaiting the feature (should be dead easy).. for both the browser mode and viewer mode menu's...
--------------------
One last request concerning this feature and that is...
5. How about displaying the status of a copied path item in the XnView MP status bar using colored text (I chose Green but standard blue would be ok). Text could also do a quick fade effect when disappearing.
It would be really informative to users and nice in order to signify that this 'copy path' action had taken place.

So what do you think about:
Copy filename(s)
Copy special >
Copy filename(s)
Copy special >
- Copy image data
Copy pathname(s)
Copy name(s)

"Copy filename(s)"??xnview wrote:So what do you think about:

I intended it menu to be like this:
+Copy path(s)
+Copy special >
~Copy image data
~Copy filename(s)
~Copy folder path(s)
------
Copy path(s) = means copying full file path to any file(s) e.g. a picture of a FULL file path of "C:\Users\Desktop\cars.gif"
"Copy filename(s)" = would go under 'copy special' sub-menu. Copying filenames would only copy just the name of the file(s)
Copy pathname = would get renamed to 'copy folder path(s)' as that's what it does and it would go under 'Copy Special'
Please also observe two further things:
-Both items need to have some support for folders in the Browser mode.
-Both, or at least 'Copy path(s)' only should be accessible from the Viewer mode too.
-the "(s)" would only auto-display on menu when dealing with multiple files in the Browser mode.
-perhaps under 'copy special' for Viewer mode only, there could be a 'Copy all tab path(s)' feature too, to copy all opened tabs full file path's

Could you add this into the next beta, maybe?xnview wrote:So what do you think about:

Currently we have:budz45 wrote:Could you add this into the next beta, maybe?xnview wrote:So what do you think about:

Copy pathname(s)
Copy name(s)
Copy => Copy full filename
Copy Image data
Copy filename(s) => Copy full filename ????
So i think that we must have:
- Copy
Copy special- Copy Image data
Copy name(s)
Copy pathname(s)
- Copy Image data

Re: Request: Remove "Copy pathname" and replace it with...
IMO there is still some ambiguity about wording.
What is a "name?" It is not clear.
Here are suggestions for wordings and functionality:
Copy to clipboard>
As an aside, if the menu structure existed as a text file (*.mnu, perhaps) a la TC, then the users could create their own wording etc...! IMO MP menus should have been designed that way at the outset.

What's the difference between?
Selected file(s)
Selected filename(s) and path(s)
And Copy can be already used as a copy of 'filename(s) and path(s)'!

Re: Request: Remove "Copy pathname" and replace it with...
I responded to this thread because it is rarely explicitly clear ( to me) what is getting copied under all circumstances. What does "image data" mean? Just the bitmap? Just the metadata? The entire file?
Admitting ignorance, here, but this is what I meant to convey:
Perhaps these options are not necessary in MP, but I notice that other softwares make distinctions between them.
Admitting ignorance, here, but this is what I meant to convey:
- Current image only: Just the bitmap, in whatever default formats the clipboard supports, for pasting into any software that can accept a bitmap from the clipboard.
Current image metadata only: Just the image metadata, in a format that MP could use to paste into the metadata of another image.
Selected file(s): Clipboard data sufficient to paste into a folder displayed in Explorer or another file manager (including MP) for purposes of copying the entire disk file(s).
Selected filename(s) and path(s): A text list of full filepaths (path + name). Perhaps a connection with the Create->File list... dialog would be appropriate here. That dialog should (but doesn't currently) have a standard UI control group for saving file list templates. The user would identify a default file list template and the "Copy Selected filename(s) and paths(s)" could use that. Or ask the user which template to use.
Selected filename(s) only: A text list of filenames only
Perhaps these options are not necessary in MP, but I notice that other softwares make distinctions between them.

Hello,
Quote xnview :
Quote johnFredC
French:
The selected file (s) = Copy! Common to all programs
Image metadata, if possible (will be great!) Should be done only in the Metadata options!
XnViewMP deserves a "media support" or actually would specify its endless possibilities and answer any questions johnFredC me and all other legitimately arise. It is not clear (sometimes impossible) for a designer to find a simple name that would define the entire scope of action.
In this instance, for example, add "Copy Special" and then listing, warns that one must be careful and it seems to me clear and sufficient

Re: Request: Remove "Copy pathname" and replace it with...
Right,
In 0.38.8 alpha, it currently now newly like this:
but, Pierre, I have changed it a little to better look like this IMO:
I included both mezich's icons (his cmd_copySpecial and cmd_copyPath), I added the suffix of 'only' to two copy items of "selected". I also added the all important "Copy Full Path(s)" (which copies path+filename) This looks nicer.
btw, it would be good if you kept 'Copy Full path' still as an editable toolbar icon even if would be under a sub-menu - it's the second most important clipboard copy feature after of course the main 'Copy' action. I also would like to see the 'Copy Full path' toolbar item available for Viewer mode toolbar customize too
