Feature request Copying/Moving/Exporting

Post by soulky »

Is it correct that xnviewmp loses all rating, colour tagging etc. when moving/copying a file? :?: :?: :?:
I wonder if there would be ways to make following scenarios possible:
1. Copy/Move files from one folder to another folder, keeping their rating, tagging, colour tagging etc within the same instance of xnviemp. Maybe with some dialog asking the user if he wishes to keep all these attributes.
2. Kind of export files to another folder (basically copying them) and have a completely different instance of xnviemp pick up rating, tagging, colour tagging etc. from the original instance/database. This could be done via an exporting function which produces an xml file for each exporting file. The new instance looks for the same named xml file and loads all the attributes into database and then deletes the xml file.

I don't know if I understand you correctly, but...

1. When you move Files within XnViewMP, their meta data does not get lost. Only if you move files outside of XnView (e.g. with the Explorer), the meta data is not copied.
2. When you copy a file with XnViewMP, the meta data also gets copied (new entry the database).

Sadly this is not what I am seeing.
Here is exactly what I am doing:
1. Selecting a file
2. Rating it
3. I see the rating in browser view
4. Copy file to other directory (from within xnviewmp)
5. Switch to target directory
6. Check rating: No rating.
7. Rate it again
8. Move file to some other target directory (from within xnviewmp)
9. Go to tartget directory
10. Check rating: No rating.
Maybe I am doing someting wrong......

My second request is when you get a portable device with files. On this portable device there is the full xnview database all files have been processed (categorized, rated etc.). Now if you want to take over the files into a local repository I don´t see a way to do this. Copying the files, removing the portable deviceand opeing them with a local instance of xnviewmp leaves them in unprocessed state. So all the work has been lost.

I let XnView write metadata into the image files or sidecar XMP files (not only XnView's database), so I can send pics to another computer via e-mail, explorer, dropbox or the like and metadata are also on the new computer. Hence, I checked most checkboxes in options > metadata - have a look, could be what you want :-)
In the XnView Wiki, you can improve the user guide / documentation / F1-help for XnView (classic/Windows) and for XnViewMP
