I have just installed xnviewMP 0.61 on a new laptop with win7 64bit, and have the same problem, the file association tool will not start at all.
I tried running it from command line from mobaxterm and it ran. I checked all the boxes, clicked OK and got about 50-60 lines consisting of only "error".
The associations for the files were messed up tho, old viewer was not associated any more, but neither was xnview.
I ran the tool again to deregister (now it starts with all the boxes ticked) however nothing happens - some "error" messages are pirnted out, about one third of what got printed out earlier.
I viewed the tool with depends.exe, and it reports one error immediately - missing ieframe.dll, however when running the profiling option, there was a missing reference to wintab32.dll from qtcore.dll
Just some info if anyone can try and fix the installer and requirements...

You just have to ignore the file association tool at all for Windows 7 and 8. Just run XnView.exe with administrator rights, go to options -> system integration and press the button to open the Windows 7 "program standards" dialog.
Does this work?
