Special Selection as improvement of Tags

Post by orloff34 »

Coming from gthumb I just tested XnViewMP 0.6 as a more powerful and feature rich alternative. But I am missing the special selection feature which is working like this:

Pressing Alt + n (n = 1, 2, 3, ...) and selected image is added to the special selection n
Pressing Alt + Shift + n and the selected image is removed from the special selection n
Pressing Crtl + n and the filter is set to the special selection n. Pressing Crtl + n again goes back to the previous filter setting.

This short cuts should work in the Browser View, Editor View and Full Sreen the same way, which is actually not so for the Tags. Tagging an image is done Space in the Browser View and with Crtl+T in Full Screen. Shift+T diplays the tagged images in Browser view. But there is no short cut to return to previous filter setting... :?

Maybe you can think about such feature for a future release. It make workflows for selecting images for special purposes like online ordering of prints etc. very easy.

As an improvement the setting for clearing special like the tags should be kept.
Kind regards

RAW Shooter-like. Too bad that Adobe killed it.

However, I think that we have planned a more powerful alternative: Albums/Collections: http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=28322

...WRT to shortcuts - there are programs (on Windows) - one of them is XnView (not MP) but it does it in an 'ugly' way - which rename the colors from the standard naming which you see (which is, in fact, Adobe's CS3 naming) to customized (user-entered) labels. The standard practice is to use colors for these, even if you must pass through the pain of 'forgetting' their labels.

Hence, the best thing (IMHO) is to have a customization window for Color's Labels - something like this (from ZPS - my favorite):
Zoner.jpg
...or like this from ACDSee (posted because it has the ability to save/load custom sets):

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Extending and customizing the color labels sounds a good idea as they are already implemented. But the described hot key functionality should be added for the first 3 … 5 color labels. I really would appreciate that.

The idea  behind is to achieve improved photo workflows with better and easier handling if photos must be selected for different post processing steps like resizing, conversion, ftp transfer etc. So at least 3 … 5 different “baskets” are created with that extended functionality which can be easy accessed with the hot keys as described.

Try Ctrl+Shift+1..5 for the Colors. ;)

Ctrl+Shift+0 is for "Uncolored". ...but it isn't working. :( (an oversight from Pierre's part)
For the time being, in order to remove the color, right-click on the thumb -> Rating & Color -> Uncolored ...or chose the same path in the program's main menu.

Hi m.Th.,

thank you for the hint with colored labels. I am using Ubuntu and XnViewMP 0.6 and the the short cuts for the colored labels are working fine, even Strg+Shift+0 for "uncoloring" :D

I tested colored labels just a little bit for my workflows and I found most of the features I am looking for: Short cuts (Strg+Shift+n) for adding and removing (Strg-Shift+0) a photo to a certain colored label are already working for the browser and viewer tab as well in full screen. The only things which are not there:

1.) Customization of colored labels as proposed by m.Th.
2.) Easy filtering in each tab and full screen by short cuts like Alt+Shift+n where Alt+Shift+0 resets the filter to all.

Unfortunately the “filter by” drop down menu from the browser is not available for adding it to the viewer tool bar which could be also activated for full screen in the settings dialogue. Making the “filter by” drop down available for the tool bars might be an easy approach…

I hope that these missing features can be added to the future release of XnViewMp…

Thank for the discussion and useful hints.
Kind regards
