Categories UX enhancements

Post by unqltango »

Hi Pierre,

these are probably hard to implement, because it was developed in a different way, so I'm OK if they are not doable. I'd like some UX changes for Categories.

1) If I select a category in Categories window, let me use F2 to rename/edit it (similar to photos). And/or long click to rename/edit the category (also similar to photos).

2) Currently I can select multiple categories in the Categories window. I'd like to be able to drag'n'drop them to photos. Multiple selection works on the photos too, so the two selection groups could work nicely together.

3) Currently I can select multiple categories in the Categories window. I'd like to be able to drag'n'drop them to Category Sets. The current set building is not really user friendly, because I have to remember and manually search for all the desired words, instead of being able to browse all my current words.
- If I drop a category or multiple categories on a Category Set (on the set itself or the header of the set): Add those Categories to the set.
- If I drop a category or multiple categories on an empty space in the Category Sets window: Create a new Category Set with a Default name. Point 4 describes some more controls regarding Category Sets.

4) Redesign Category Set Manager. Instead of having a new window to add keywords(when you press Manager on the Category Set header), do it in the Category Sets window.
- Add Create Category Set button to the header (instead of the Manager button).
- Add Delete Category Set button to each Category Set header.
- Add Rename Category Set button to each Category Set header. (or just use the F2/long click).
- Use the above drag'n'drop method to populate Category Sets.

5) Options in the Preferences to automatically save safe copies of the Categories list. Since these are small files, I'd keep multiple timestamped versions. Maybe save a copy every 10 minutes, keep the last 5. Or some customization in the Options about how often XNView should make a safety copy and how long should it keep it.
