Faster .heic Viewer (arrow left/right) browsing

Post by golemus »

Browsing .heic pics in Viewer with arrow left / right buttons is considerably slower than other comparable modern formats like .avif or .jxl (JPEG XL). It is also considerably slower than browsing through h.265 .mp4 videos (which I would assume are using same codec?).

To be fair the same problem is also present in Faststone Image Viewer and Irfanview. They use whatever codecs are installed (MS Hevc extensions are slow but also with Copytrans Studio codecs they are slow.

As so many other programs / codec combinations have the same problem it is maybe not easy to solve but most recent version of MS Photos in Win11 browse smoothly through pics so there must be way to do that.

I understand that it is patented format and programmers are not necessarily eager to invest into such thing but sad reality is that very large amount of high quality cameras out there (Iphones, Samsung Galaxys until at least 2022ish) have HEVC as the only modern format for saving. Internet glaimed that some Galaxies could do AVIF but mine (S21FE) cannot and JPEG XL seems to have barely any support.

So at least simple thing as browsing through pics with arrow buttons could be faster.
