Ratings and color markers are not saved

Post by Konzertheld »

Hey there,

I'm using XnView MP Linux, Version 0.93.1 64bits (Mar 7 2019) on Manjaro. Ratings and color markers for my photos are not saved. I tried rating in full screen mode via hotkey as well as in browser mode via the context menu. Once I exit XnView and re-open, they are gone.

When I switch to saving ratings and color markers in XMP files, everything is fine.

When I run XnView MP from the terminal, no errors appear in the terminal log when I rate an image or assign a color marker. Also no errors when XnView exits.

I'm open for investigation. :)

Cheers,
Konzertheld

(Edit: Initially, I wrote "categories" but I meant color markers.)

Sorry, I don't think I understand your question. What exactly do you mean by catalog? As mentioned, the problem also occurs in fullscreen view.

There are three ways to save ratings, depending on Tools, Settings, Metadata choices
- xmp embedded metadata for JPG files
- xmp companion files (sidecar files)
- Xnviewmp database only
Only the third one produces the error?

( Ratings were designed to be applied to pictures, but I think xnviewmp can create xmp files or database records for all types of files : does anyone here use this feature ? )

I don't know how to activate companion files, but the error occured in "database only" and seems to disappear with embedded xmp, yes. At least I thought so - yesterday I had a case where it didn't work with embedded xmp but I do not yet know why.

I've just tried on ubuntu, and no problem.
I start XnView (settings>Metadata - import XMP only), set rating or color label on 2 files, quit, restart and i have the good rating/labels

Cannot confirm (for 0.96 now). When I apply rating / label in fullscreen, it's even gone already when I switch to the browser (Enter key).

Where is the rating stored when xmp is deactivated? In the XnView database? If so, where is the database stored? I will check permissions then. Is there some debug log I could check?

Interesting. I found XnView.db in ~/.config/xnviewmp/XnView.db and it has not been written since October. The user running XnView has write permissions though. If I delete it, it gets re-created with 0 Bytes.

Strange, and Thumb.db?

Thumb.db does not even get re-created when I rename it, also unchanged since October.
