Send by email - Connection Failed ERROR - Linux/Ubuntu

Please help. I would like to send photos by email from xnViewMP but the viewer can't find my email client !

It reports the following error:

Connection failed - Host not found

System Information
xnViewMP 0.65 on Ubunto 14.04 (32 bit)
Default system email client: Gnome Gmail - makes no difference with Thunderbird

Editing /home/USER/.xnviewmp/xnview.ini to include my gmail username and password and gmail's smtp URL have not worked

THE EMAIL section records the address and text of mails I've tried to send - it does not seem to be involved in the problem.
