Re: XnView MP for Beginners - Guides and Tutorials

Apologies in advance if this has been addressed elsewhere, but I despite searching the Windows registry, the forums and the options in the XnView Classic app, I couldn't find a setting for this.

The XnView Shell extension is the only app/extension I've managed to find which allows you to flip images from the File Explorer context menu (which is quite awesome indeed :D)

My only gripe is that when trying to flip an image whose height and/or width are not a multiple of 8, a warning appears that unused pixels may be removed. This becomes a little a bit irritating if you're flipping multiple images.

Is there any way to disable this warning? :?:

Thanks,

Ivan

Shell extension: Warning message "Lossless transformation" cannot be disabled

Post by helmut »

Other than XnView MP, XnView Shell extension has very few options/settings. From what I can see there is currently no way to disable the "no multiple of 8" message when rotating images.

A side note:
This message has been around for many years and whenever I deal with this message I wonder whether this pretty technical warning message is really helpful for users: Be careful: Unused pixels are removed! Why should I care and stop the action as long as the image content remains 100% the same? Remove as many unused pixels as you want but don't shock (novice) with such complex questions! ;)
Honestly, an info message instead of a question message would be much more appropriate.

I am in complete agreement with you about the message's relevance, Helmut—especially if you're just starting out; as we both said, why do we give a damn about a row of pixels being removed from non-multiple-of-8 high/wide images?? It's highly unlikely we'd notice any difference...!

I guess I was kind of hoping that the developers might see the post and give some useful feedback, a hack or an explanation of why the message can't be disabled (or, ideally, add its disablement to the wishlist for future versions of the app...)

Thanks for getting back to me. Guess for now, I'm just gonna have to get used to dismissing the damn message boxes on a frequent basis... :?

I'd argue that it is far more important of an issue, that pixels are removed, without the user choosing to do so. That should be disabled by default, with enabling it being an option.
If it is enabled, the warning should be there …but not every single time. A checkbox with "show this warning every time", that you can uncheck, to get rid of the warning (that can be re-checked in settings), should be included.

"Lossless" changes that remove edges…
That's about as clear a loss, as you can get.
