Migrating to MP

Post by mizar1 »

Hello,

I've been a regular user of "Classic" for many years now. Upon my latest update-request I've been invited to migrate to the newer MP-environment and so I gave it a try. I'm quite impressed and almost would have stayed with MP - until I stumbled upon two differences as compared to Classic I simply cannot live with.

First and foremost I'm using xnview as my standard image-viewer for associated image-files. That is without opening Xnview per se (e.g. for sorting or editing-purposes) I will just click (or hit Enter) on a filename in my preferred file-manager and then expect to get that image shown in full-screen-mode with maximum size. That's about 85% of my usage. Then I hit <Esc> or close that image with a special mouse-click and move on to open the next one (if there is any) in file-manager. That is necessary because the xnview-browser will present the images in a totally different order and for instance 2 or 3 images downloaded most recently are now scattered all over the place among perhaps hundreds of images in the browser.

However when pressing <Esc> the new MP-version will not simply close down but will rather change to either browser- or viewer-mode (as configured in the options-section) - but it will not simply close down as Classic did.

The second issue I have is about comparing (similar) images visually which I happen to do on a regular basis. In Classic I would select 2 images (via <Ctrl>-key) and then choose "Compare" from the right-click-context menu. I know this can also be done via pressing the <Shift-C> shortcut but I still prefer to use either the keyboard or the mouse and not having to constantly switch the UI used at present time

So two (maybe silly newbie-)-questions arise.

1. Can the full-screen image-viewer in MP be configured in a way to just open the image clicked upon in full-screen-mode and then immediately close down on pressing <Esc> or sending <Esc> via mouse - without opening the browser or viewer in an unsolicited manner thereafter?

2. Can the right-click context-menu in MP be adapted/configured so that "Compare <Shift-C>" would also become an entry in the right-click context-menu as is the case with Classic?

If that turns out to be merely a matter of proper configuration could you please describe precisely where to alter the configuration/options to achieve what I'm looking for? Many thanks in advance.

you have configured Settings>Interface>Keyboard - Pressing ESC...?

Thanks a lot. I wasn't aware of this

Sure. But <Shift-C> already exists - I'm fine with that.
What I really need/miss right now is a way to include/declare "Compare - <Shift-C>" into the right-mouse-click context-menu as has been the case by default in "Classic". Can this right-mouse-click context-menu be adapted/configured in MP individually to add or remove entries of menu-options?

Thanks a lot again for this future commitment about the context-menu! I'm already back to MP since I've been able to remedy that <Esc>-nuisance with your help.

Since all the possible configuration-options have become quite extensive by now it would perhaps be a good idea to implement some kind of search- or filter-option that would be effective across the whole scope of settings. So - for example - if I'm unaware of the possibility to configure the <Esc>-key or where that feature might be located - I could then just type "Esc" into a filter-/search-mask atop the settings-region and as a result only a sub-set of those locations would pop-up or remain visible where any settings could be tweaked that would refer to / or be relevant to "Esc", regardless of their original (hidden?) position within the settings-subtree-structure.

Unfortunately I've discovered another annoyance in MP that has also proven to be quite a nuisance in Classic for quite some time but has been remedied there long ago.

I for instance am using the browser (nearly) always in Fullsize-Window-mode whereas the viewer is set to show images fitted-to-desktop in Classic (missing in MP) and in MP with the window fitted to image.

But then the MP-viewer will show an image narrower than the screen-size centered on a fullscreen-page with white space filling the screen left and right. So one will want to change the viewer to windowed-mode with the window fitted to the image.

The problem is that when double-clicking/switching to browser again thereafter now the browser-window will be reduced to whatever size the last viewed image had - and vice versa. If I now set the browser to fullsize-window again - as it should be - and switch to viewer once again thereafter - now the viewer image will show up fullsize as well again - and no longer with the window fitted to the image.

So browser and viewer NEED TO BE DECOUPLED window-mode-wise!

If the browser is set to maximized-window-mode by the user it should stay that way until the user changes it while at the same time - if the user chooses normal-windowed-mode for the viewer - it should also stay that way, regardless of the browser-window-mode used in-between.

That is, if the user chooses so, browser always in maximized-window-mode and viewer always in normal-window-mode must be possible without one mode interfering with the other. Just my 2 ct and my opinion.
