Categories or keywords

I've defined about 100+ categories for my images.
Nevertheless when searching an image for a special need
the partitions made by the categories still get too large with the time.
Example: I'm searching for an image where I took a photo
of repairing my bike on a tour.
My idea: Give it the (intuitive) keywords "bike" and "repairing".
Defining this kind of intuitives as categories would blow the
number of categories very much and would make it unusable.
But in XnViewMP "keywords" work only as embedded file entries
for special formats if I get it right?
How to handle that?

you can add categories to all files by using catalog or sidecar

Sidecar is not acceptable for me (and probably many other users).
