EXIF place, country, city

Post by Matview »

Good morning.
I have a problem and I can't solve it. Please help.
Well. I have photos taken with a smartphone. Photos have EXIF data. Geographical coordinates. I would like the photo to show the place where the photo was taken - next to the date. I know that I can use GPS data, but then only coordinates are inserted - numbers. I want the name of the town based on these coordinates. It is possible? I know that there are IPTC data and there is an option to insert a place to take a photo, but when I click, nothing is inserted.
Have any of you had a problem with this before?
Kind regards!

Hello,
Smartphones usually add the gps coordinates in the exif data. When viewing, the gallery software queries an online database to display the place names. A pc software like Geosetter can do the same thing and also save the names in IPTC or XMP fields.
Xnviewmp can only display a map with a single mark for a photo containing exif GPS data.

Thank you very much for your answer and tip.
I will work with this program. I'm a bit surprised that such Lightroom does not have such an option.
Kind regards

I may not be completely understanding what it is that you are wanting to achieve.

While I do not know of any automatic means to attach location information to photos, there are numerous ways to accomplish this manually.

If you have the GPS coordinates and do not know the nearest town, type the coordinates into most browser search bars and a map should show up with the location pin-pointed.

Desktop Google Earth Pro is a big help in deriving locations from coordinates.

The GPS Editor in digiKam has a means of reverse geolocating.

If you know the location addresses of the photos, you can manually add them into the photo files using the IPTC Editor in XnViewMP; digiKam has this ability as well, but XnView has the better IPTC Editor.

ExifToolGUI has the ability to manually add location information into files in all the various metadata formats.
