Can't apply rating

I just updated xnview and I can't add any new number rating to my pictures. I keep adding a number but everytime I close xnview and reopen it I have to keep adding the number.

EDIT: It looks like the star rating doesn't show up in the tab but it does show up in the gallery, is there a reason for that?

I hit ctrl+(some number between 1-5)

Funny you should ask, it looks like giving it a star from the menu (as opposed to ctrl+(some number)) does keep the rating on the picture.

Latest version? on jpeg files?
So shortcut doesn't work, menu works?

Yes, only menu works all the time, hotkeys work most of the time, and I don't know what version of my software is, I don't see it written anywhere in the app or it's folder, but I do remember updating it recently when it asked.

They are .jpg files. And my version is 1.7.2 according to help>about.

do you rate in browser? which values do you have in settings>Metadata?

I should clarify, the rating does show up in the browser (especially if I apply it in the browser) but if I assign it through hotkeys it sometimes disappears from the picture, but it does show up in the browser. I made this thread when I noticed the rating was not showing up on the picture and I was worried it wasn't staying. But it does stay in browser so where it really matters.

I don't know how you want me to answer that. Do you want me to take a picture of the Metadata settings or say which boxes are checked? It's not really that important, when I made this post I thought the pictures weren't getting rated because the number didn't show up on the picture, but it does show up in the list and that's what counts.

However to answer your question these boxes are checked...

Automatically import xmp:Subject and IPTC:Keywords to Catalog's Categories
and
Read hierarchical keywords from images as categories

So boxes 1 and 3, not including sub boxes.
