I'm really confused about this software.
I really don't understand the diff btwn Classic and MP (whatever MP stands for, who knows)
But, here's what I need.
I need software that can read whether selected files have the DATE TAKEN exif data field filled in. If so, the program needs to copy that date and append it as a PREFIX to the file name. For example, let's say I have several hundred photo files selected using this software. The software needs to check to see if there is data in the DATE TAKEN field. If so, the software needs to append it to the file name of that photo.
EXAMPLE:
Photo 1:
File name: _IMG 23495
Exif data
DATE TAKEN: 2001_03_13
APPEND Date Taken (2001_03_13) as a prefix to File name (IMG 23495)
RESULT: 2001_03_13_IMG 23495
Photo 2:
File name: _IMG 5364
Exif data
DATE TAKEN: 2003_11_19
APPEND Date Taken (2001_03_13) as a prefix to File name (IMG 23495)
RESULT: 2003_11_19_IMG 5364
etc... etc... etc...
Can XnView do this?

Batch rename... (Browser tab > Tools menu)
☑ Name template: aaa{EXIF:Date Taken [Y_m_d]}_{Filename}
☑ Replace: aaa_?
☑ Use regular expression

Thank you! This is extremely useful. I installed XnView Classic. Is this the correct software to use? Or do I have to install XnView MP?

Re: Re-populating date taken data in BULK using XnView?
OK, I could not get it to work.
Here's what I did:
I selected four files to test using the application's windows explorer type browsing window.
Step 1:
Batch rename... (Browser tab > Tools menu)
Step 2:
I checked the box "Name template" then Inside the field I entered the following: aaa{EXIF:Date Taken [Y_m_d]}_{Filename}
☑ Name template: aaa{EXIF:Date Taken [Y_m_d]}_{Filename}
Step 3:
I checked the box "Replace" then entered aaa inside the field called "Replace"
☑ Replace: aaa_?
Step 4:
I checked the box "Use Regular Expression"
☑ Use regular expression
All four files showed no change from old file name to new file name.
Please advise.

make sure your files have EXIF:Date Taken or try other dates (press⏵to see all variables)

Re: Re-populating date taken data in BULK using XnView?
OK, thanks.
Looks like none of my pics have DATE TAKEN exif data present thus the no result.
I did do what you suggested by hitting the "play button" for different variables.
I did find that Date created inserted the date into the file name but it inserted it into the middle of the file name.
Is there a way to get the program to insert a PREFIX to the file name?
I ask because this is the way the computer reads dates and it organizes folder creation for my photos.

Re: Re-populating date taken data in BULK using XnView?
Also, does XnView only work on .Jpg photos?
I have a need for it to rename Video files (.avi, .mov, MPEG, etc...) as well as .png images.
Can this program do that?
