Re: Update catalog from all folders?
Obviously we're still misunderstanding each other.
I try be giving the step-by-step scenario, OK?
I have a fully configurated MP,
with dozens of folders,
a lot of categories,
and say all the files assoziated to categories.
I think no misunderstanding so far?
OK, now, with the time, there are many files
added to the different folders. Here and there.
From outside applications (explorer, graphic apps etc.).
Now I open MP.
As I identify my files by category, it is important
to have all the files associated with categories.
Otherwise I wouldn't find all of them (e.g. searching
for files with category "USA" etc.)
As I know there have been many files added to the
dozens of folders (but I don't know which and where)
I need to identify them to associate a category to them.
If I let show the special category "uncategorized"
TAATAAH ...
they are NOT shown.
As MP only notices a changement when I open the folder.
Which means I would have to open ALL dozens, hundreds
of folders one by one just to make MP update the "uncategorized".
This is worse than bad.
There is need for a one-click for that.

Re: Update catalog from all folders?
XnViewMp can't guess where and when photos have been added.
The first task is to update Catalog...
I 'm not sure if XnViewMP is able to update the catalog with "add folders" button ...
As my categories are wrtitten in iptc and xmp keywords inside the photos, my own way is to delete all entries for the catalog (or rename xnview.db) , and create a new catalog ("Add folders" for the root folder) This takes about 30 min for 60 000 jpgs ...
Then, I think you'll be able to show uncategorized in recursive view ...
Another way is maybe to display and select all images (recursive display), and click "View, Update catalog from files" ....
It will take the same time.
Edit : Nji9 said
This is most harmful, as it will erase ALL category assoziations but the ones included in the files.
BEWARE!

Re: Update catalog from all folders?
Thanks for your thoughts.
Yes, it's the update of the catalog from the files.
But not a complete update but just the category "uncategorized".
I described why this is important in a typical use case.
It shouldn't be possible only by tricks I might think.

Re: Update catalog from all folders?
But this can't work, because the new files are in the catalog already...
So something like settings>Catalog>add folder, but where only files not present in catalog are added, right? Or perhaps 'check for new files' (with current folders in catalog)

Re: Update catalog from all folders?
I can't tell if the new files are noticed by MP
in my use case.
But I doubt it.
To me it seems, as if MP only notices new files
when I open the folder the new file is located it.
If that is the case, it would be bad.
I have to admit I don't understand where is the problem
in getting my very usual usecase of a tagging app.
Why don't you just try yourself EXACTLY the way I described?
WHY?
in my use case.

Re: Update catalog from all folders?
If files are in catalog, you should have them in 'uncategorized'
But you don't tell me if file are or not in the catalog, so not easy to understand.I have to admit I don't understand where is the problem

WHY?
The only way to find 'uncategorized' files no in catalog will be to have a settings>Catalog>'check folders' to update the 'uncategorized' tag

Re: Update catalog from all folders?
I CANNOT tell if the files are in the catatog or not,
as I don't know how MP is working.
But I can tell that the folders in which the files are included in
are included in MP's catalog.
I don't have that in my MP.
Do you mean in Tools/Settings/Browser/Catalog?
There is no "check folders".

Re: Update catalog from all folders?
I'm glad that we are understanding at last
And I hope you see that this is no "strange" requirement
but a typical use of MP.
Actually I have nearly hundred folders included in MP.
And I really can't tell where and when I added files to.
Looking forward for "check folders"
