Hi,

your new Version 0.64 is very good!!

I have two OS (Linux_Mint and WindowsXP) on one Laptop. On WindowsXP i have installed the new version 0.64, on Linux-Mint 13 i have also Version 0.64 installed and on each OS the programm works fine. All my pictures are on a further partition, formatted with FAT32. The path for the databank is also on this Fat32-Partition, for both OS.

For example: running the programm on Linux_Mint and i will do some ratings on the picture, this will be showed on the tumbnail.

After this i shutdown Linux_Mint and reboot my computer with Windows_XP, running XNViewMP and look the same pictures, but on this OS-Area the ratings are not showed.

What can i do?? Is the path of the databank to Fat32-partition wrong??

XnViewMP works on the network. And more, XnViewMP works in multi-user mode, if the "multi"-users aren't so "multi" + "pushy". In normal conditions, I think 10 or more concurrent users are ok. Also, if you put an SSD under the database, then the things are even better.

Just tried with two different workstations your test case. It works ok for me.

Please do the following:

1. In Mint open the XnViewMP and go to Tools | Settings | Integration | Paths and there press the 'Open the Database Location'. In that window, write down the path in a Notepad (or similar) and try to create a text file inside with some text in it. Can you create the text file? (IOW do you have write rights inside) Can you modify it? The edits are saved?

2. Close everything, reboot and enter in Windows go at the same button in XnViewMP and press it. The window which is opened, shows the same location? Can you see the temporary text file created at the step 1? Can you re-read the content from there?

3. If yes, go to Mint again. The ratings/color are really saved? IOW, rate/color some photos in a folder. Go to another folder and back to force a re-read. Or, alternatively, close+reopen the program. The colors/ratings are still there?

4. Do the same thing from the step 3 for Windows. In Windows everything is saved ok?

Test & report back.

Hi, i understand your way for the solution, but how i create the text-folder with witch path-text??

I klick "open the database Location" (Screenshoot ONE) and this folder will be open...... see Screenshoot TWO. Inside this folder there are objects:

- default.bar
-default.keys
-Thumb.db
-XnView.db
xnview.ini

Where i have to create a new txt-file? Should i open one of these 5 files? use gedit or Leafpad. My Database should be saved on my FAT32-Partition called "Daten_MIX"..... and my WindowsXP-Partition is called "IBM_Pre..." see the left side on picture TWO

Thanks a lot for the clear explanation and mainly for the screenshots.

But ...hmmm.... ...mhmmm... mmmm...

I don't like at all the name of the folder: woll .xnviewmp For me, this is a hidden subfolder in your home folder. On Linux.

Theoretically you need to create the text file in the opened folder from screenshot TWO (there where xnview.db and thumbs.db are located). However, I think that it is quite clear that the folder isn't correct.

Do like this:

1. (optional) Take from that folder the xnview.db and thumb.db and copy them somewhere else for backup purposes.
2. In the Screenshot ONE you have next to the button "Open the Database Location" a dropdown list labeled "Folder for Database (.db)" - change that from 'User (System)' to 'Custom'.
3. After this press the '...' button next to it to choose the (new) location of the database. A navigator window should appear with which go to your volume (Daten_MIX) and select there your desired folder. Save & close the navigator.
4. (optional) Press the 'Open the Database Location' again in order to see that the XnViewMP really points to your folder on Daten_MIX. Perhaps is better to restart the XnViewMP and check again.
5. (optional) If everything is ok, take the files backed up at step 1 and copy on the folder from step 3-4. Normally there should be already some small (empty) databases generated automatically by XnViewMP.
6. Close Mint, open Windows and do the same process from steps 2-4.

Now your XnViewMPs from both OSes should point to the same db from the same folder. Beware at the write rights on Mint system - usually the *nixes are quite tight sometimes. If something goes wrong, you can do the test with the text file from my previous message in order to see if both XnView installs 'see' the same folder.

Thank you for your detailed "to do list", but itś not really good working. The testing txt-file is a good idea. The written test on Linux-Mint OS i can read on the Windows-XP OS ... and as a next step and test on WinXP written with with more words this text-file i can read it on Linux_Mint. This works fine, in both directions.... But...:

On Linux_Mint marked pictures with ratings and color-labels are readable in the WINXP-Area. This is very good! But otherwise, changes of the labels doing during WIN_XP area is active are will not showed as changed in the Linux_Mint area ((

The folder are adjusted in "custom" and my database with my text-file are on FAT32-partition called "Daten-Mix".

Have you another idea??

An new deinstallation and installation is not the solution.

In Linux_Mint OS i have in my folder-tree my picture-folders two times. My Fat32Partition is mounted. Please look the attached screenshot.

So, on the tree in he middle there is the same folder, green line marked, and has the same objects inside (Pictures) inside, as the folder at the bottom on the tree.

The path for the middle-folder is: //media/Daten_1/....
The path for the folder at bottom is: /media/Daten_1/....

Only in the folder at the bottom, all changes from winXP-area will be showed, but not in the folder from the middle of my folder-tree, but the pictures in both folders are the same.

My database is on the same FAT32-Partition.

Have you more idea?

So you're sure that:

1. Both installations are pointing on the same db.
2. If you update the db from Linux the Windows sees the changes.
3. If you update the db from Windows the Linux does NOT see the changes.

Why the folder appears two times? IMHO this is a Mint/FAT32 mounting daemon problem, unrelated to XnViewMP.

Perhaps you can try to make both installations to look at the folder at the bottom? (the one which let you see the changes from WinXP: /media/Daten_1/...)
