- I have just had a problem whereby many of my previews (include File explorer) had stopped working.

- Eventually I discovered that for File Explorer the problem was with a Windows 11 software update. The only current fix for me is to deploy PowerToys with it's extra preview options for File Explorer.

- In the meantime I had updated Ghostscript to see if that would fix the problem, only to discover that it stopped PDF thumbnails and previews within XnView MP. Aghhh.

- Much testing later I discovered

- No Ghostscript v10 worked properly, some of the early ones, ghostscript-10-03-1 and 10-05-0 seemed to work BUT some of the PDFs were cropped on the RHS. I did not test this extensively, but I did notice those PDFs showed images count = 2, no idea what that means.

- THE FIX - I then tried the latest Ghostscript v9 I could find which was v9.56.1 from
https://ghostscript.en.uptodown.com/windows/versions
I hope that is a reliable source.
I did find versions on the official Ghostscript site but I do not understand how to install them!

I do not understand how Ghostscript works with XnView MP, what functionality do we lose by not having v10, will v9 miss out on new versions of PDF?
From reading around it looks like v10 is a major rewrite for security and a new PDF interpreter, so no wonder there may be problems with the API.

It looks like there is a fix for this in XnView 1.9.6, so hopefully this is just a temporary fix.

And for sure, XnView MP still "the best"
