Catalog Filter panel; Properties / File type don't show items

Post by nji9 »

Well... the subject says it all:

The count of say "gif" shows in brackets, but clicking on it doesn't show the images.
Filter is at "Images".

Do I do something wrong?

Maybe, maybe not.

Those counts are only updated at program launch, so if you deleted the gifs while the app is running, the count will still show 2, but they will not appear in the viewer because they are no longer there. If you quit the app and relaunch and the gif count changes, then this limitation was affecting you.

Also, when using the catalog in this way, the viewer pane is still subject to the Viewer's filter control. Make sure your filter on the Viewer is set to ALL. If the gifs then appear, then it was user error: you had the filter set to exclude what you wanted to see.

Hopefully this helps...

Thank you for the reply.

However I didn't deleted any images, nor is the filter setting the cause.

No matter which File type I choose (all have counts in brackets) show ANY images.

(Maybe it's a bug in MP, as I updated from a version that didn't have Properties filter?)

You could try doing an "update metadata" (in catalog settings).

If that doesn't help, then I suggest you do the following:

1. Exit the app
2. Make a backup copy of your xnview.db and thumb.db files
3. Start the app, and delete all the directories from the catalog: Tools->Settings:Catalog
4. Rescan the folders that contain your images.

Once the images are added back to the database, check and see if the problem persists. If the problem remains, then Pierre will probably need to look at your configuration.

If you are unhappy with the results, you can always close the app, and restore the original files you backed up.

During this process, you will lose metadata that was not exported to the files or sidecars (ratings, categories, etc). Metadata that was exported to the files will be reimported if your settings are right.

Regardless, you can always restore the original db files (make sure the app is not running when you do) and it will be like you never did anything. But at least performing this procedure will help isolate the problem.

"update metadata" did the trick! :)

Suggestion:
However it seems a bug to me that MP counts the numbers,
but doesn't show the items when clicking.
Having to update the metadata... that should be done by the MP
if necessary, not if user thinks on that.

Thank you very much for your support!

I think it was more a case of your db being in an inconsistent state.

My suspicion is that it will not happen again, because it was probably a result of something that went wrong when you upgraded. There were issues with that previously but it was thought they’d all been addressed.

Once you’ve done the update metadata, you will not need to manually do it again, unless you change your version of exiftool or modify the .Exiftool_config file, like to create custom tags.

I would generally recommend people run update metadata once when upgrading from a version before 1.9.6 to a version of 1.9.6 or later.

Anyway I'm glad to have helped. Cheers…
