Settings and INI Files: Installation with specific default settings

Post by waldo88 »

Hi all,

we are using the licensed and payed MP version in our office. If we are no wrong, the default settings are, to open an image in the diashow view. Right? So, we like to change the default settings. We could see, that we have three options. INI file under "User" or "Programs" or save the settings in the registry. So, we are using multiuser systems. So we are thinking, its better to save the settings under "Users". But, if an user are using the application for his first time, so the system (xnview) are creating a new INI file. Its possible to create an initial INI file / configuration, so xnview are using my set default settings for each ne user? This functions would be very importand for us. Thank you in avanced.

If you would rather post your question in German, one of the German speaking users or moderators may be able to help you?

Is it possible to create a default .ini or registry and send it for new user?

Or in other words: You can either roll out (install) XnView MP and then "install" a custom "xnview.ini" file continaing default settings that you want (only your desired default settings should be in the xnview.ini). Alternatively, you could create a custom installation package by downloading XnView ZIP package and adding your "xnview.ini" containing your default settings and then create a new ZIP package that you roll out (install) on all PCs.

PS: I'm one of the Germans here in the XnView forum but I much prefer if discussions are held in English because many more people can read and understand and thus benefit from discussions.

PPS: Your English is perfect, waldo88. ;)

Thank you Helmut :D

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately that's not sufficient for me. Unfortunately, XnView MP has a few basic settings that I don't like (slide show, etc.). So if I copy an ini file in the program folder, then the user can no longer make any permanent adjustments (he dont has admin rights)? It would be nice if there was an administrative option here. At least for the paid version. Thanks!

Any settings changes made by a user will be saved in their .ini copy as long as each instance of XnView MP is running independently, the customised .ini you provided will be modified, no need for admin rights as far as I know... :D

Edit: In my only very brief visits to Windows 10 21H2 recenly, I'm primarily a Linux user now, I think that I may possibly have seen a settings change only remembered when using an admin account: if you are not obtaining the result you expect, possibly that is the explanation... :?:

Is your .ini in the Program (XnView) location?

Could a Windows 10 user comment on that, and possibly if necessary do a test?

@waldo88:

I did a test yesterday in Windows 10 21H2, and can now confirm that with Tools > Settings... > Integration -- Paths set to place the .ini file in User (System), settings changes made when the program is run in a user account are saved to the .ini file... :D

That is, I think, the expected result and should meet your stated requirement above as I understand it. Conversely, when the .ini file is placed in either the Program (XnView) or Windows Registry option, it would be expected that settings changes would only be saved when using an admin account.
