Hello:
Very good test and interesting.
klaus2 wrote:-- MP native = without pack, without ffmpeg.exe: 9-10 secs ....Very very fine!! but no flv thumbs
I think maybe you are misunderstanding something here. When MP is using Directshow then it is in-fact looking for installed codecs. Some are already installed on your system by default, Some need too be added for .flv

I think the result you got here is because of no .flv thumbs being decoded = less time

The way I understand that it works, Is if MP see's ffmeg.exe it uses it. If not then it uses Directshow

Her is a read on codec delima: (Hope it's alright to post links, if not then Mods fix as needed)

Hi Erixx haxx,
Thanks for your interest!
For to exclude the potential side-effect you mentioned i excluded the FLVs (only 8 from 100!) from the test
an rerun it (= with MP4 files only, having system provided codec).
The results are, proportionally, the same:
-- having k-lite codec pack installed: 14 secs
-- with addon ffmpeg instead: 14 secs
-- MP "native" (without k-lite on top): 9 secs ...... beats all!

I understand your general point about the codec packs, but i have, for several reasons, a different opinion here.

so my vote would be: if ffmpeg.exe exists, use it, but only for file types where it is needed,
defined either by failure of DirectShow or - better! - by an option (like "use_addon_ffmpeg_for_types=flv,avi" or similar,
maybe, if one wants so, with a default value "=*)).
The benefit would be to combine the speed of MP native with the flexibility regarding codec-less files.
There is no reason to be happy about a decrease of speed by approx 50 percent!

I found a workaround (for Windows7 x86, x64) with that i can live because
** it does not imply any loss of performance when creating the video thumbs **:
a) Install k-lite, but do not install any codecs, install the codec tweak tool only (here you can enable the thumbnails)
or
b) use Icaros shell extension handler (eg. from videohelp.com). Here you can enable the thumbnails too.
.
Result: the thumbnail creation for "codec-less" file types works fine, and there is no decrease in performance in the Browser.

Hello Klaus

Glad to hear you found a workaround.
Thank you for posting how you got it to work the way you wanted. 'or can live with'. Us others can use this info.

I admit I'm still puzzled by the amount of time difference you were seeing. Still glad you got it working though.
