Shell menu causes Explorer to crash on Windows XP desktop

Post by bartman2589 »

When I attempt to perform various right click operations on the Windows XP desktop with the shell extension for XnView 1.97.6 enabled explorer crashes (sometimes restarts, sometimes doesn't), I have confirmed that this is caused by the XnView by using a utility called ShellExView from Nirsoft to selectively disable context menu entries and the only one that's causing a problem for me is the one for XnView, the problem only seems to occur when I right click on one of my desktop shortcuts where I now have an XnView shell menu entry named "XnShell File's Icon..." for some reason.

I saw a similar thread for Windows 7 here in the forums where the OP was advised to disable an option that was referred to as "Change Icon" I see no such option in the options menu in XnView so I would like to know what I can do to fix this.

Edited to add: I have just confirmed this to definitely be a problem with the shell extension by also installing the 1.97.6 version of XnView (the complete version using the windows installer) on my secondary computer as well which was previously running the 1.96.2 version (with whatever version of the shell extension was bundled with it in the complete package), and now I'm having the problem not just on one computer but on 2 computers! Also the first computer I had this problem with was a fresh install of XP with no prior installation of XnView since the fresh install of XP.

Ok, so is there a workaround for now to allow me to still enable the shell extension without having to worry about having explorer crash on me all the time when I go to do things on the desktop? Perhaps the last known stable version of the shell extension should be posted on the website for now for those of us that want to enable the shell extension without having to worry about explorer crashing?

Also it's an entirely new issue as near as I can tell since NONE of the previous versions of XnView that I have used did this!! I never had an XnView context menu entry on the Windows desktop until this new version. As I stated NONE of the previous versions that I used EVER did this, the previous version I was running (1.96.5 and whatever shell extension version was bundled with it in the complete package) worked just fine and did not have a desktop context menu entry.

You told one of the other people with this problem the same thing but there is NO setting for that that I can find!! Show me a screenshot or something of where to find it!

If you mean something related to file type associations, then I should point out that I don't have ANY file types associated with XnView under the 'associations' section of 'System Integration'.

I means, options of XnViewShellEx. If you click on a picture file, do you a crash? If not, go to XnViewShellEx's option
