Bad news: The problem came back after restarting Windows. :x

Deactivating all non-Microsoft shell extensions with the latest version of NirSoftShellExView didn't help.

BTW: I remember similar issues with LopeSoft FileMenu Tools v5.2.

:?: Pierre, do you think there could be something wrong with this key in my registry:
  • HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Cached\

Could you try to change the value of Flags for ShellEx registry. For example, try to disable the preview with 6

Which value needs to be changed?
This is what I've got now:

Code: Select all

"NoEPS"=dword:00000000

"SubFolder"=""
"ThumbW"=dword:00000080

Sorry, doesn't change a thing. :|

Isn't it weird that v2.3 of XnViewShellExt.dll works great despite giving me an error message when I register it, ...
RegSvr32 wrote:DllRegisterServer in C:\PROGRA~1\XnView\1936\ShellEx\XNVIEW~1.DLL failed.
Return code was: 0x8002801d
... but registering v2.4 goes smoothly?

Thanks for the test version, Pierre. This time you got it nailed down. Well, almost:
  • Windows Explorer doesn't crash any more (even after Windows has been restarted).
  • With the default settings PowerDesk Explorer is still crashing, but disabling the preview thumbnail ("Flags"=dword:00000006) prevents that from happening now.
BTW: I really like the new features!

You have a crash when you open the context menu?

Correct, but only in PowerDesk and only if Options... » Menu items » Thumbnail is enabled.

:) Hello !

• I'ld suggest you a try with Total Commander (the trial version is not limited).
- Here I can enable the thumb nail in TC local menu, no problem… :?:

:) Hi Clo!

I'm a long-time user of the paid version of Mijenix PowerDesk Utilities 98 and later Ontrack ExplorerPlus v4 & v5 (which has the same codebase as v6 by Novatix & v6 by V-Com & v7 by Avanquest).

I've tried every file manager under the sun, and I'm always open to new things, but as long as GP Software won't cut prices on Directory Opus I'll probably always go back to ExplorerPlus + XXCopy.

:) Hi !

• I guess that all has been said already in the thread you quote, that isn't the point…
- I thought simply to a test in order to work out your problem, since it seems now that the issue is with
your file manager only, while that works in others (in TC for me, and also in Nexus I've only to test such snags).

Oh yes, all and then some. :mrgreen:

The point I was trying to make is that there have to be a significant number of ExplorerPlus users, and if these crashes occur with all or some of its derivatives, looking for a fix should be worth while.

Although I doubt this will be of much use to Pierre, I'm posting a screenshot of 7-Zip's File Manager (v4.57):As you can see, thumbnail and filename for browser-700x560.gif are missing in the system context menu.
