It's because your ace files are not recognized by XnView.
Do you have enable option/General>Use all file format?

Yes, Options > General > Display all image types is checked.
Why would XnView recognise the files for the main window and not the Preview Window?

Not no recognized too in browser window, for unknown file, XnView ask windows explorer to send a thumbnail if possible...

Pierre,
Will you be able to fix v1.98.1 or should I go back to using v1.70.4 where everthing works fine?

With 1.70, you are able to view your ace files?? Could you send me a sample?
