It's not like I use the same path every time; just any long path, like the examples I gave previously. i.e. here's another example, the one I happened to use in this last video:
D:\_Pics+Vids_\PicsToSort\2020-02) Covid (Covey,Kingston,Iceland,Kauai,Baltic)\Compressed\2023-03-02) TRIP - Caribbean Cruise (8 Countries)\2023-03-12) Barbados (CruiseEnd, AnimalFlowerCave, FullCountryLoop, Sargassum, Oystins)\4136 - P_2 - Copy.jpg

Yeah not sure what else I can say - I just tried it on a different physical PC, and reproduced it exactly as shown. So it happens on 2 different PCs, with the path specified & the image shown on dropbox.
To be clear: it can change the modification timestamp; it just fails to change the exif timestamp.

issue remain
to reproduce
0. prerequisite
- enable
long path names in windows
- unzip test folder into disk root directory
(2 folders of 100symbols each and several files of 50 to 80symbols)
1. open folder with images in Browser
2. select all files
3. try to edit metadata, via
- Clean
- Edit XMP
- Change timestamp
- assigning categories and Update files from catalog
some actions will only work with 50symbol file
ps: maybe this will help -
exiftool: New API WindowsLongPath option
