I continue to have a problem with Auto zoom... when Zoom... would surely mean the same, the zoom values being preset values and the inclusion of 'auto' only potentially adding confusion. So the following might actually be a better option:

View > Zoom... > Fit image to window

When considering menu text, possible alternatives should surely be viewed as a user would see them. Read in full, my suggestion seems clear to me:

View > Image size... > Fit image to window

Otherwise, I would support Pierre's suggestion or my variation on it as reasonable alternatives:

View > Display settings... > Fit image to window

View > Display options... > Fit image to window

Clear communication, especially to new users, seems more important than a detailed examination of the possible meaning of necessarily brief text...

Sure, 'Zoom...' would do - but the 'Auto' is descriptive of what the next panel is going to offer.

View > Image size... > Fit image to window

'size' and 'zoom' are different words with different, distinct meanings!

Changing image size means changing it's physical properties.

Changing image zoom means only changing how it is presented to you on-screen.

I think you're focusing on the word 'image' when you should be looking at 'fit' - which in this context is synonymous with zoom.

No. It's too generic. It doesn't tell the user that the next panel will offer... auto zoom options.

Nope, not 'Auto', meaningless in the context and confusing...

So back to the other options, mine accepting that Fit image to window *is* an image size:

View > Image size > Fit image to window

Or one of Pierre's which seem satisfactory, such as:

View > Display options > Fit image to window

Auto = Automatically
it is standard prefix for such functionality, just google "auto zoom option"

there is Auto zoom in ImageGlass and other auto stuff exists, eg Auto-rotation in IrfanView

Already enough menus, isn't the View menu the natural location?

Auto zoom makes sense for cameras, but I don't see many comparable software uses.

Wasn't the starting point that 'Auto image size' was causing confusion?

Maybe View > Fit image to > Window height etc?

Once again - that is flat-out wrong. Words have meaning and context. What you keep suggesting is going to confuse everyone.

I'm not going to install every image viewer / editor on the market to prove a point, but here are two to help you understand:

So, either 'Auto image size...' is renamed to 'Auto zoom...' as I originally said. Or all the functions in 'Auto image size...' are moved to the 'Zoom...' menu.

After checking other apps, i'll use 'Auto zoom' until a better word is found

when checking Zoom - group menu items, i think that it's better like that so 'Zoom'.

and 'Auto Zoom' in settings instead 'Auto image size'

Why not consistency and just one 'Zoom...' menu?
So 'View... Zoom...' and context menu 'Zoom...'

That would be consistent with GIMP + many others. It seems to be the de facto standard.

Just add "Lock zoom" at the end.
